been busy hatching eggs

Postby huntall » Sat Sep 09, 2017 7:14 pm

I got started hatching out eggs and it's a lot of fun.
Hatched out 87 quail , 53 chickens, and 7 Guineas.
I started with 77 baby quail I bought .then when they started laying I put bunch in incubator.
After I had good hatch I processed half the first batch quail.
I figure I can just keep the same system and always have fresh quail. It's good eating.

I hear u....I love it! I even lost 25 pounds just being outside fooling around instead of sitting around house. Didn't even do anything different except being outside in evenings rather than sitting in front of tv

As my fresh hatched quail are getting bigger, I start processing about 15 of the older at a time and that gives me more room in my pens to spread the young quail out.
I have been cleaning them and cuting them in halves and frying.

Also making plenty pickled quail eggs.
This is corturnex quail and at 9 weeks old they are laying and eating size.

Man that's a great hobby as long as you got the room, I like to fry them up then smother them in gravy and have them with biscuits but that will put the weight right back on.

I have 6 laying hens and have realized that they are taking up too much of my time. I can't let them run loose because of the dogs and cats, and we can't go on a trip without having to get someone to take care of them. I am freezing some of the eggs, giving some away, and eating a lot of them...... Love some good fried quail smothered!

I would love to have some quail. I wonder if it's possible to release a few at a time and have them survive?

We have chickens and enjoy fooling with them and having fresh eggs

The quail wouldn't stand a chance in wild due to preditors In my opinion. The corturnex guail are pretty easy to raise and are not too wild acting.
I've had a few get out a time or two and caught them pretty quickly.
Bob white probably lot more wild acting.

Huntall you are probably right. I just remember when we use to walk the farm with a good bird dog and kill a mess for supper.

Our neighbor down the highway raises quail to release (and I think hunt). This summer I have seen a couple on our gravel road. I have to stop and go around them. I did see one that had been hit on the highway. Don't know what kind they are.

I have about 30 chickens, put in an automatic water and have 2-25lb automatic feeders that give me some lee way if we want to go off for the weekend. I love the fresh eggs and the wife and children like to fresh meat. I try to hatch off at least once a year for new chickens. But do to being so busy I have not been able to do it this year.

Jv, I cleaned 18 more quail this week and left them whole this time and gonna take about half and marinate in Italian dressing then wrap in bacon and grill. I think leaving them whole they will not dry out too much and bacon always good to wrap birds in.
I think this should turn out good. Worth a try

Sounds good to me...
I like to fry them up and smother them in gravy and serve over rice or biscuits or both.

Back when we had plenty quail, to hunt. My dad would pull the breast out peel off the skin and feathers and rinse well. Then he marinate them in a mixture of Tabasco and vinegar, with dehydrated onions and garlic overnight. Then slice and eat raw, called it hillbilly sushi.
