Raising turkeys

Postby huntall » Sun Apr 15, 2018 6:55 pm

I have been raising a good many chickens but I got a turkey pair and I've been getting the eggs and have started incubating them. I have 4 hatched out now and more almost ready to hatch. We are going to keep the hens and the Tom's gonna go on the smoker.
I love smoked turkey so I'm good if we hatch hens or toms....lol

So far they seem to have same requirements as chickens.
I'll see how it goes if I get about a dozen turkeys together.
I hope if the young Jakes grow up together that they will not fight as bad.

I know if I grow my young chick's together they don't fight much when they get older

All the ones I have had will fight each other, fight their reflection, and fight you if allowed to get old enough.

I figured that would be the case. I'll probably try split them up some so they will be more evenly Spread out.

I have a hen that sits in nest all day. I have been gathering eggs dayly but she still sits on nest. Will she try to sit and stop laying even with me pulling eggs?

Unless they are about a mile apart I still think they will go nuts trying to get to each other. I had 1 gobbler that would travel about 3/4 of a mile south of me just to fight the neighbor's turkey. After going and picking him up several times I just told my neighbor to shoot him if he comes back. Thing is, he had about 4 hens here but he would leave them just to go fight that other one.

Stickers, im sure you are right about them trying to get to each other. I'm starting to get a few hated out so we will see before long I'm sure. Seems like the baby turkey poults are a little bit harder getting started eating and lively at a day or two old than the chickens are.
