Anyone know what this is?

Postby buckcrazy » Mon Oct 10, 2011 7:50 am

I literally have deer in my driveway 20 feet from my house eating whatever this is growing in my garden. I have been wanting to pull the weeds but haven't done it yet because the deer are eating it while I'm in the kitchen. It's some type of weed, or least it looks like it.

I was thinking "maypop", but that's not the right name.. Maypops have bigger fruit than those. We have those weeds also, and I know the name of it, but it slips my mind right now :bash:

whatever it is the deer are eating the heck out of it. I have some in my garden and they are mowing it down big time. Sat on the sofa saturday night and a doe and a fawn were munching down as i watched them through the window.Couldve been an easy 15 foot shot but i wouldve hit the glass ;)

I thought "maypops" was a brand of tire.

If they are eating it that well I would get some of the pods off and dry them for seeds. I have saw the stuff before but have know idea what it is, did not know deer eat it.

How would I go about drying them? Should I leave them in the sun? I've read somewhere to put seeds in the refrigerator but never done any seed stuff before.

Put them in a bag with a few small holes in it and leave them in a well ventilated place for a week or so. A produce bag like the kind grapes come in does well.

Don't forget to send me a few of the seeds!

Those things grow in our garden after everything else dies... Never seen anything eat them. May dry some seeds and try to plant them in the woods...

Went back this week and they wiped out whatever this is. They mowed it down to the ground. Took this pic of the spot this week.

I have seen deer wear those things out before and always wondered what they were. If anyone ever figures it out please let us know.

I've looked at 50 million weeds on the Internet today but still haven't found it. Now it's driving me nuts and I'm not going to quit until I find it. I know one thing I've typed in goat weed and got all kinds of different weeds and other items and not one time did it look like this stuff growing. On a side note if you're looking for some energy for "extra curricular activities at home" I know some websites to visit now. 

Just got this in an email from one of the deer biologist at the MDWFP:

What you’ve got is known as Chinese Lantern - aka gooseberry, aka husk tomato. It’s common, but usually not browsed that readily by deer. BUT…you’ve got it in your garden….which likely was fertilized. Deer will often times browse ‘lower quality, less desirable’ plants if they are fertilized – especially in the southeast part of the state because soil quality (and fertility) is lower.

I hope this helps –

Justin Wilder Thayer

Looks like I finally got an answer I was looking for.
