Wasted money and a question.

You guys recall my "bottom plot". Well I had a beautiful plot of wheat, oats, clover, turnips, rape, and peas. Prolly 1.5-2 acres. Well the land owner sprayed to kill the vegetation other than the pines and now I have a brown plot. I always plant my plots in late aug and sept. What do you guys suggest I plant. I'm in Alcorn county. Was thinking about pretty much the same mixture without the clover.

I think you will be OK with the mix without the clover, but As late as it is I would Polly not plant turnips and oats. Oats are not as cold tolerant as wheat and rye. Turnips will also get a slow start this late!
Does them spraying have any effect on new seeds being able to germinate or not?
Good luck!

I would plant just what I had planted before, I did not get my in the ground last year until the 3 days before season and it did fine. It will warn up don' let this little cold front fool you. Good luck with what ever you do.

I'm sorry your plot got sprayed. I can see that the landowner and you need to have some conversation about allowing you to have a food plot. I'd hate for that to keep happening.

In my experience, you will not get much of anything to grow well planting it this late unless you are very lucky with the weather. Based on what the deer are eating the most in my plot, I'd suggest planting Elbon Rye. It will germinate and grow well. It is cold tolerant down to about 20 degrees. It won't likely form any heads this fall however. But the deer will eat it readily, it is cheap to buy, and easy to plant. Winter Wheat would be my second choice. Bob Oats will be killed by the cold too soon to do you much good.

I certainly would replant something. Good luck.

PS> If all else fails broadcast corn at a very heavy rate without tilling it under. It may not germinate but deer seem to not care about that. :D

I would plant Wheat, Abruzzi or Elbon Rye , and Marshall Ryegrass all 3 or cold tolerant and BeardandBones is right, it will be in the 80's again next week and more rain coming you will be Ok by Gun Season. My $.02.....ed

This was a new plot that I had just put in this year. He had them to nit spray the plot we plant yearly. In the future, if he sprays again he will avoid the plot. I have about quarter a drum of wheat and about 25lb of Australia winter peas. I will prolly go get some of the rye and plant it maybe tuesday. I still have to complete the "skybox" house. Which sits on this plot.

I am old enough to remember deer hunting, when we did not know what a food plot was. And we always killed deer. If you just get out there and hunt, you will kill deer. Let the neighbors spend their money while you sit back and wait for them to walk by. :2TU:

I'm the neighbor everyone likes! Well not really cause I'm the one hauling the good deer out.

Went to the plot today it is growing great. The wheat and oats are about 1" and clover and rape are up about .5". No sign of the winter peas yet.

Chadbragg,
Glad it worked out for you!
We had a similar plot in our lease.
We created the plot right after it was clearcut.
Now that the pines are about 20 years old we had to abandon it as it ran north/south and just did not get sunlight anymore.
