OK FOLKS CORN PLANTING

Postby rjenkins1981 » Fri Jan 30, 2009 4:19 pm

I AM GOING TO PLANT A SMALL CORN PATCH THIS SPRING, ROUGHLY 25' x 50'. I AM GOING TO HAVE IT ROWED UP AND PLANT SEED WITH A MECHANICAL GARDEN SEEDER. I AM ALSO GOING TO FERTILIZE AT TIME OF SEEDING OF 17-17-17. ONCE IT GETS ABOUT KNEE HIGH I THEN WILL SIDE DRESS WITH AMMONIA NITRATE.

THEN ABOUT A MONTH AFTER I PLANT, I AM GOING TO PLANT CLAY PEAS ON THE SIDES OF THE HILLS.

MY ? IS, WHEN DO I NEED TO SPRAY FOR BUGS AND WHAT DO I NEED TO USE. SOME OL TIMER TOLD ME "SODEY". WHATEVER THAT IS I DO NOT KNOW.

ANY HELP OR ADVICE ON ANY OF THIS WILL BE APPRECIATED.

ALSO ANY RECOMMENDATIONS ON SEED TYPES, I AM TRYING TO DO THIS WITH MINIMAL EXPENDITURE. :bash: :bash: :bash:

Around here we can still buy plain yellow field corn seed for about $2.00 a pound.
If you wait until the corn is knee high to plant the peas it will shade out the peas before they get going good

I'm trying to remember just what "Sodey" is, Heard of it just can't remember

if you have a deer herd of any size they will wipe out a 25x50 foot patch in short order...it may not be that beneficial for you...

With the price of fertilizer what they are, I have not planted corn in two years. But when I did, I plant as follows:

Spray it with Atrazine before you plant..

Use Round-Up ready corn.

Fertilize it when I plant with triple 13

Come back when its about 6" and fertilize it with ammonia nitrate.

Spray with round-up when it needs it..

You can spray regular corn after it comes up with some herbicides
Atrazine may be one of them Check with a farm supplier or County Agent

atrazine should be sprayed before you plant, and its to keep broadleaf stuff from coming up..

hate to say it but unless u keep the area roped good and sprayed with that deer scarer awayer, 25x50 is going to be too small...i planted a small garden last year of corn just to do it(no deer in the area to eat it tho) (planted regular deer corn) planted it, (no fertilizer, just corn) as soon as the seeds germinated i fertilized it, then at about knee high or higher i fertilized it again, and was suprised every single seed i planted made 2 perfect ears of corn lol.

I just plant any good field corn, trucker favorite or such. and just regular field peas, crowder of pink eye. They eat them up. The club plants the iron clay peas on the club plots. Just go to the Co-op and tell them you want cheap field corn and peas
