The Beaver Loses Today

Postby FireCloud » Mon Jun 28, 2010 9:02 pm

Full story now posted in my "Life On Trehon Creek" blog on this website. It's too long for a post and a bit graphic so if you don't like details of the kill, don't go there. Otherwise, get some :pop: and enjoy!

Just got in from a fourth beaver hunt, this time with a photo of the dam builder at work. Unfortunately for this beaver, he will not be building any more dams after today. Story of the hunt to follow afer a shower and some dinner!

Yep, that is his head jutting out of the water. He is carrying a stick in his mouth and there is a coke can floating beside him. Here is a close up.

Your beaver drink Coke? no wonder they are hyper
Good luck on your mission
I tried the same thing a few years ago and totally messed up my deer travel patterns; so now They have their fair share of the property and I get my freezer full of Venison and an occasional bobcat pelt as the critters skirt the beaver pond

kicked myself in the tail for 2 seasons because of the trapping and dam busting :W:
Did you know that a deer pulls real easy floating in water?? I can pull one 300 yards without getting tired :)

I'm all for the pond and the benefits it brings to the habitat. Just don't want the place to be filled with a dozen 50 pound beavers! Nor the trees cut down or the land flooded.

So I will just have fun shooting them now and then to keep them thinned out. I'm pretty sure this is not the only beaver for miles around. Am betting he has friends nearby.

Usually no matter how many of anything I kill out here, I don't make a serious dent in the population.

problem with that is you usually have to cross a ditch sometimes or another when the water's high enough to float a deer, knee boats ain't gonna cut it, sometimes hippers won't either. So don't forget the rope to throw across the ditch so you can pull the deer across when you get to the other side.

Do dead deer float? Most animals only float when they are still alive and sink like a rock when they are dead.

I do know where the ditches and stump holes are, fell in more than one in the days gone by :W:

FireCloud, I used to hunt in the swamps and found that a deer shot anywhere but the lungs that dies and then falls in the water will float, at least for a while. If they drown they will sink. It depends on whether or not they die with air in their lungs.

Thanks...that's what I figured. Drowning fills the lungs with water so they sink.
