All things considered, the best one is a gun the hunter can make an accurate, clean one shot kill with. My personal favorite is a Remington 700 30-06 with the action bedded, barrel freefloated and a 20 ounce trigger, Bushnell Elite 4x12 scope, shooting a Sierra 168 gr hollow point Gameking out of LC 69 match brass with 51 grains IMR4064 pushing it downrange 8)

There is no such thing. All of them are rather effective if you know how to use them. 8)

I like my Browning 7mm-08....not sure it is "the best" deer gun, but like jbullard1 said, I feel real comfortable with it and feel I can make a good clean kill with it.

Browning A-Bolt 7 mag, because my wife gave it to me for Christmas. GTK, my son shoots a Browning A-Bolt 270 WSM, it's a great shooting gun. It kicks harder than my 7 mag, must be due to being lighter.

I am with cavcav. Actually he and I have almost identical rifles. I really like the 7mm-08 cause it has very light recoil, has a nice short action, and outstanding preformance on white-tailed deer. Now does all of that make it the best rifle? Of course not! It just makes it my favorite.
Score one for the little guy!

The one you like the best. For me its a custom 7mm Rem Mag. If I chose just one then the question from better half would be " Why do you need all those other rifles then?" I like them all.

On the low end of the $$$ scale I like the Savage 110 family in 30-06 or 270. I bought my son one in 30-06 and shot it when I took him to the range. Almost took it away from him. The AccuTrigger, as they call it, is possibly the best out of the box trigger I've shot and the accuracy was incredible for a gun of that price. It was literally a tack driver.

I've heard good things of the accutrigger, but have not had the pleasure of shooting one yet.
