I shoot a T/C encore .270 rifle. I am planning to have a pistol barrel for it before the 07 season opens. The gun is a tack driver now, from a bench 100 yard groups can be covered with a quarter. I am trying to decide if I want to stay with the .270 for the pistol barrel. If you were in my position would you change calibers and if so, what would you change to?

I'd probably change calibers, just to have something different. I don't know what I'd change to though.

I also agree. Now a couple of questions
Are you recoil sensative?
At what range do you plan on shooting 100 yds, 150yds, 200yds?
What barrel length are you considering?

encore

Postby Part Time Hunter » Thu Dec 14, 2006 9:18 am

I will probably get the longest pistol barrel available. I want something to shoot in the 150-200 yard range. I will probably never shoot that far with it but want to be able. Most of the deer I have killed have been within 75 yards. I am leaning towards changing, just have to decide to what. I have been with .270 for alot of years and I am very satisfied with it, but I am looking at .308 or maybe .280. I have looked at the charts several times and can't decide.

Any of the calibres you mentioned will do a fine job but they will have a LOUD Muzzle BLAST And heavy recoil in a pistol. I shot a contender a few years back in 35 remington talk about muzzle jump

I am suprized at the encore

I own another .270, the recoil on the other is alot worse than the TC. The TC pushes up more than back. I have never shot one with the pistol barrel and don't really know what to expect. I am gonna check to find out what calibers are offered. Of course its like rifles that kick bad, they don't kick when hunting.

.280 or .308 would be my choice. leaning more to .308 due to aval. ammo. might consider a wildcat cartridge also

TC offers 25-06, 7mm-08 that will be effective to 200 yds. and will have less recoil than a .270. Another option is a .243. If you want something bigger then I would opt for the .308. My next rifle barrel will be the 7mm-08. I'm like you I would get something different than what you already have so you'll have more options.
