9mm bullet question

Postby jbullard1 » Sat Jan 12, 2013 1:14 pm

Do any of you know if this 115 gr Hornady hollowpoint will cycle in a German Luger? This is a 9mm bullet at .355" diameter

Jerry I copied this from the Speer Reloading Manual Number 10.

My manual says industry maximum diameter is .3555 but the groove diameter varies from .354 to .357

I'm not sure but I think his concern is that the flat nose of the hollow point might hang up in the Luger.
I also think they were designed for the round nose FMJs

Found this on line?

"Question: What's the Difference Between 9mm Luger and 9mm Parabellum?

What is the difference? Lots of folks have wondered about that. And there are lots of other 9mm cartridges around, too, which can be confusing.

Answer: The short answer is this: None. They are simply two different names for the same cartridge. And 9x19mm is another name for it - as is 9mm NATO. Many of the different 9mm names refer to the same ammo, shooting the same bullets.
Whether you call it the 9x19mm, 9mm Luger, 9mm Parabellum, or 9mm NATO, it's the same cartridge. Same size, that is. Some military ammo is loaded hotter, and/or with harder primers, for use in submachineguns. Such ammo should be avoided for use in your average 9mm pistol.

Now, I don't mean to oversimplify things here. There are a host of other 9mm cartridges, which are not the same. These include the 9mm Action Express, 9mm Bayard Long, 9mm Browning Long, 9mm Centerfire (which is actually a shotgun shell, if you can believe it), 9mm Makarov, 9mm Ultra, 9mm Winchester Magnum, and 9mm Kurz (380 ACP) just to name a few."

I think you are gonna have to load some up and see. Many times you see finicky feeders. Maybe yours has a ramp that will feed them without hanging.. maybe not. That little bit of exposed lead may be enough to snag..who knows

This pistol is a collectors item but I an not going to put it on a shelf.
Just looking for some info on what I think may be a good self defense load.
I'll load a few and see if they feed through the action.
It cycles the fmj 9mm rounds flawlessly I just want a little more umph
