Help settle an argument

Postby bruiser » Fri Jan 18, 2013 11:16 am

Which cal. bullet will over penetrate the most ( thru walls of the house) between
a .45acp 230gr. and a .380 100gr. ?

I say the .380 will, because of the faster flight and less resistance because of lower overall mass. Although I believe the actual amount of over penetration would not be
by a considerable amount .

I would almost bet money the 45 would do way more damage and penetrate more.. I cant wait to see others opinions

Why don't you guys set up some jugs of water and just see which bullet will penetrate the most jugs. Or you can set up some pieces of 2 X 4 and see how many each will penetrate.

Like RoadRanger I think the 230 grain bullet will penetrate more of each.

Find some old phone books, place in water until saturated. Then for true penetration test shoot them. Supposed to be close to shooting human or animal. You might be amazed. Use the big thick one that has the white and yellow pages.

I also think the .45 will penetrate further as it has more momentum but the .380 has less frontall area which might make it a very close call.

Help settle an argument

I think it will depend on bullet design. Let us know what you find.

Thanks Mag. I like those vids. wish they had it with the .380 though!
they are similar cal. so I would assume the .380 would perform a little less than the 9mm

I am surprised that at the 45 ballistics , thought they would be a little better too !!!!

Given the same velocity and a reasonably comparable bullet shape the 45 should penetrate a good deal farther. Try this at home. Get a BB and a piece of buckshot and, while your wife isn't looking, throw them (same speed) at the wall somewhere in your house. This little scientific experiment should clear the matter right up for you.
