Traded for another gun

Postby gtk » Mon Feb 04, 2013 8:51 am

I went to the gun show's in Southaven & Memphis this weekend.. Ended up with a Ruger M77 MarkII 300 WSM. The gun feels great, but seems to weigh a little light.. I haven't shot it yet, but I imagine it will have a little "punch" to it..

I may try to trade it up , and get that Kimber 8400 300 WSM a feller has that I want :)

Chad.. . if you need a pad for a 270, i can't imagine what this 300 will do.. . I"ve never shot one before.. Heaviest recoil gun i"ve shot is a 45-70..

So what am I to expect ? :)

Which stock is on it? It shouldn't be more than your 45-70, but the 45-70 is more of a push than a kick in my opinion. My 270 has the skeleton stock and has a sharp recoil.

There's nowhere to put anything over 180 grains.

Finally traded up for the scope I want on this gun. Got a zeiss 3-9x50 on it, had to order a higher ring for it. Finally got it all in and on the gun.

Loaded up 20 rounds of 165 grains barnes Tsx's ,

Starting at 61 grains, I loaded 3 of each 61,62,63,64, & 65 with a few extra 61 grains to get it on paper at 100 yards. I figure to take the smallest group and load up/down in .5 grain increments to find the best load.

Sound about right ?

Sounds like a plan. I usually start in the middle or a couple grains from Max and work up in .5 grain increments.

I usually look for most accurate powder first then start messing with my charge weights and COAL. That is if I have a few powders on hand that will work.

from the "research" i've done, most folks are getting the best results for their 300wsm, using either RL-15 or IMR 4350. so I figure i have a 50% chance of getting a decent load :)
