What is the best over the counter brand and weight to use in a 243. My son bought one and has no idea, nor do I. He purchased a box of winchester 58 gr. Sounds like a varmint round to me.

I used the 100gr corelock to start with and hardly ever found a good blood trail so I switched to a federal premium Vital Shok or triple shok in 85gr and had much better results.

Barnes makes a good one just like the federal premium that may even be better.

No problem...my boys have shot a 243 for about seven years and the lack of blood was the only issue we ever had with it. We dropped some in their tracks and other deer we never found a drop of blood and had to circle woods and stumble up on the deer.
Sometimes had a decent trail but most did not.

We use 100gr federal PowerPoint. Longest trailing job has been 50yds and good blood. Hope I can send you video soon terry!

Yes, those are good bullets, Chad. One of the farthest kills I ever had was with a 243 Browning BAR shooting those and it dropped him deader than a hammer at 410 yds. I couldnt believe it. Relatively inexpensive too. I believe they are loaded with a Speer bullet.

Jr painted my turnips red today! The deer went down in the plot(ran 20yds) but poured blood as you can see.

i've been shooting my 243 since 1980. i started with core locks and they wouldn't go through the deer. i switched to federal in 100gr and they do great. in the past few years i've used wolf 100 gr soft point and they do very well.

Last year my son used a 243 on a doe at around 60 yards, we had the Hornady 100 gr . Superformance sst.
It was a bang flop and she never twitched.
They say ballistic tips do better at longer distances.
The shot was behind the shoulder and about 2 to 3 inches higher from the center.
Tremendous havoc on the inside !
There was busted ribs on both sides with a little exit.
I mean all functions ceased !
