Havent taken the time to check ballistics but is there any advantage a short mag has over a carefully reloaded 06 :?:

IMO short mag has a flatter tragectory and a bit more range with energy to boot, but for short range(200yd and < ) the '06 will lay them down for sure. If range is in question though, I have a friend that dropped a nice 7pt at 556yds this year across cotton field. my best '06 was 347yds with Rem 150gr. Mag has more recoil '06 would be milder. I'm sure if a poll were taken of "If you could only have one rifle, what would it be" the '06, 270, 7mm would make up 95%. Now, thats my .02worth.

The good thing about the '06 is that any place that sells ammo will have some .30-06 in stock.

There is no comparison between the two. The 300 wsm beats 06 hands down. Now you can buy the bullets anywhere.
