Buck of a lifetime but.....

Whats happening in your neck of the woods ?

Buck of a lifetime but.....

Postby RoadRanger » Sun Nov 18, 2018 12:04 am

This evening I shot the buck of a lifetime. He is at least 9 years old. Has a genetic problem where he is in velvet year round. He grows and grows till he breaks off then starts over. He has been on the hit list for 8 years but like most ghost never been seen by a camp member. Only on camera at night.

Made a perfect shot on video with my son. Found him fast and it still hasn't sunk in as to what happened. I need to enter him into our contest but I dunno how many points he has or even how somebody can score him. Like I think he possibly has 20 or more points.

His testicles never dropped so he didn't breed we don't think but the bald spot on his chest does shows he sure did a lot of trying lol. His front hoof was broken in half on one of the toes. I swear he is a freaky deer. Ok there is the story now let's see if I can post pics on here. Thoughts on how to score him are welcome.

Pictures just don't do him justice. Every inch has bumps and barnacle type growth. Not sure what else to say about him. Still in shock I guess

Our scale broke when we weighed him but ball park weight was 285-300 lbs. ImageImageImage

Probably the fairest way to determine how many points he has would be use the rules from the Boone and Crockett Club for non typical whitetail deer.
A: NUMBER OF POINTS ON EACH ANTLER
To be counted a point, the projection must be at least one inch long, with the length exceeding width at one inch or more of length. All points measured from tip of point to nearest edge of beam as illustrated in Figure A. Beam tip is counted as a point, but not measured as a point.

Any 9 year old deer is a trophy in my book. :2TU:

According to the rules, if the point is 1 inch in length it counts.

Took him to my taxidermist on his day off so he could get started on it to preserve the velvet horns. Since the never drop I guess they are horns? Anyways he said I'll have him back in 6-8 weeks which is lightning speed to me

14 minimum... I just don't know lol . It's a really strange problem I never expected to have. I'll withhold entering him into the contest until I get him back I guess?

Did he have balls? Usually the case where they have injured them and don’t drop its antlers. Congrats.
