A little advice for my first time in MISSISSIPPI?

Postby Cagleyss7 » Sun Oct 16, 2016 7:12 pm

Hey guys and gals,
I am a brother hunter from the east TN area of knoxville, TN GO VOLS! after getting our Burts kicked this past weekend I have now been relocated for 2 weeks to the Jackson, MS area and was hoping to get some hunts in over the upcoming 2 weeks. Could anyone give me any advice on where I should look for goos hunting opportunities or public property with good whitetail population? I'm a mid 30's father of 3 beautiful kids, respectful, honest and a man of faith. I just want the opportunity to hunt while I'm in your beautiful state. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.... pm me for contact info if you don't want to share publicly here.. thanks in advance!

:welcome: welcome to the site Cagleyss7. I have never hunted down around the Jackson area but there are a few public hunting areas.....Bienville WMA is to the east of Jackson and Pearl River WMA is northeast of Jackson off the Natchez Trace in the Canton area.

Welcome to the site. There s also a lot of Forrest service land east of Jackson that you might try.
Two weeks is not long to learn about an area. But get out and enjoy the state.

Welcome! If you can get up to Panther Swamp or Delta National Forest you might have some good luck. Those are south Delta federal public lands.

Welcome!!!

You might try Hillside NWR just above Yazoo City. I've put a link below. Its 15000 acres. There are some days that parts of it are limited to draw hunts but there's usually some area open to hunt.

flipper mentioned Panther Swamp. Its part of the Theodore Roosevelt National Wildlife Refuge Complex. The Complex includes Panther Swamp, Hillside, Morgan Brake, Matthews Brake, Holt Collier, Yazoo, and Theodore Roosevelt NWRs.

edited to correct some info. I had that Panther Swamp is part of Hillside NWR when I meant it was part of the Theodore Roosevelt NWR Complex.

Here's a link to the TRNWRC. You can link to all the NWRs that are part of it from that page.

Morgan Brake is another good place to check out a little piece up the road from Hillside....used to hunt there a good bit and has some good deer.
