SuperHunt 2016

Postby RoadRanger » Mon Oct 31, 2016 9:25 am

Let me start by saying that the people who put on the SuperHunt for these kids with disabilities are top notch folks. My son was able to participate this year and it was so awesome. These kids are the sweetest and funniest I have had the pleasure of spending a weekend with. Although they have their own limitations they love the outdoors and wont be stopped.

We hunted in Benton on a farm that has several big bucks and full of does. The kids are sent to stands that will accept the motorized wheel chairs and what not and give them the best chance at success. Our camp had 6 hunters along with guides, land owner, a master cook that kept us fat and happy, and parents/ family. Needless to say it was a packed house and I am so tired.

Now on to my personal experience with the hunt. Brayden has never had a chance to kill a deer. He hunted with me for the last several seasons but just no luck. We sat in a place called the horse shoe stand which is a 6000 dollar shoot house with a stair case and about as fancy as you can make it. As the sun started to rise Brayden , our guide which is a close friend and myself had our eyes peeled for movement. After around the one hour mark 2 does were spotted skirting the outer edge of the plot. They seemed to be coming to us but a small racked buck pushed them back off into the timber. Brayden never even got to see them because it was thick and he didn't know where to look.

Feeling down and out at the missed opportunity we kept sitting. Maybe an hour later we were playing a game on my phone and the guide said deer! I said yea right. He was like NO, buck in the plot!! When I looked up sure nuff there was a small 4 point slap dab in the middle. Like he came from a hole in the ground ( Which by the way I think deer can hide in holes in the ground ). The buck fed away from us not seeming like he was hungry but just out for a stroll. Brayden got the .243 out the window and as soon as the crosshairs touched the deer he was gone. Faded into the timber and for the second time we had heart break.

But wait here he comes 10 yards to the left where the does were earlier. Surly this is the same young buck that pushed out the does. The window in the trees was small and just so happened to be lit with the rising sun so Brayden was able to spot him quickly. As the gun was moved back into position the buck was almost outta sight. I was NOT gonna let that happen if possible so I through a hail marry and started whistling loud as if I was calling a dog. Being so young the 4 point froze in the sunlight and posed perfectly broadside for my boy.

BOOOM the gun went off without me or the guide knowing he was that steady and ready. I jumped but saw a slight mule kick of the rear legs and he was gone. We just sat there shocked at how fast that happened and that he was able to make that work. Start to finish the entire thing took maybe 30 seconds. We went down to where the deer was standing and found a TINY TINY speck of blood. Then another , then another. Not much to go one and looking grim to us adults but after only 30 yards there his first buck was tangled in a thicket of bamboo.

We high-fived and hugged then took some absolutely beautiful pics of the deer in the plot with the shoot house in the back ground and the foggy sun rays beaming into the field. A memory that will not be forgotten and a young man who is now looking for that next rush of adrenaline from the deer stand.

Terry you have them on your place too. I just start whistling about the first of November and call all of them up my way. This year I'm going to share with you though. I want you to get plenty to cook up so I can drool over the pics of your meals you post.
We are getting more and more bucks in this area. Which direction from downtown Benton is this place?

I have no idea. In fact, I am thinking of bowing out. And letting an alternate take my place. I am very busy, and the weather does not look good.
I will always support the teams. But if I feel I can't contribute, I need to let someone else step in who can put points on the board. I will announce my decision tomorrow. Good luck to everyone.

Congratulations Brayden. Nothing like your first buck buddy and you won't ever forget that hunt no matter how many big bucks you kill the first one will stick with you forever. That story almost brought tears to my eyes because I'm lucky enough God saw fit to give me two perfectly healthy young men. I can't wait for Saturday morning when I can get my two into a stand and they get to look down the barrel at a deer and drop the hammer on one.
If you keep God first in your life everything else will fall into place.

That is an awesome story! I am glad Brayden has someone like you to take him hunting. Every kid needs their own RoadRanger. Every hunter should make it a point every year to give up one day to take a kid that doesn't get to hunt, on a hunt. At the end of the day you will figure out you did not give up anything. Do it once and you will do it again.
