Attention all gun guys

Christmas is approaching and Brayden, my almost 14 year old is needing a new deer rifle. He isn't a fan of big recoil although he did shoot my .270wsm at that monster buck and said he never felt it. Lol. I'm looking for a few things in a rifle fit him. Something he can have through adulthood, currently shooting a cheap youth .243 ... Needs to be capable of shooting well out to 300+ yards as we hunt delta land... Priced not too expensive... Also will need to put a decent scope on it. I'm a big fan of Nikon ProStaff so likely will go that route. Post up thoughts and opinions

I'm thinking that to shoot at 300+ he will have to live with the recoil.

6.5 creedmoor, 308, 7mm08? Or truth be told I have a 7mm that has less felt recoil (can't understand why) than any gun I own. It's good to way out there lol.

Spend a little extra on good glass with turrets. And ammo and plenty of range time!

243 will kill that far also. Just like any caliber need to hold over for that range. I love the 7mm. Like I said it doesn't kick and can be used on anything. Gun fit has a lot to do with recoil also!

As far as brands? Savage is accurate. Browning and tikka are too. The new Rugers are tack drivers! I'm not a Remington fan when it comes to rifles.

You buy once on a quality gun and keep it for years!

Also I'd suggest getting him some good ear protection. He's at the age now that I wish my dad would have made me wear some. Instead I got the noise flinch and fight it to this day!

25-06 might be an option.
I would go with a minimum of 1,000 ft.lbs of energy at 300 yards.
but that's just me...I like knockdown power.

Although not traditional a good AR style sporting rifle will adjust to him as he grows.

Although he is almost 14 he just hasn't hit that growth spurt so recoil is something his short stature didn't like. I figure any day he will shoot up in height. The reason I said 300 yards was that's how far or bigger plots can see. I heard savage has made big gains in accuracy over the years

I recently gave away a Savage 110-G in 30-06 to a nephew. It was accurate enough for me but the screw in the back of the bolt would keep backing out.
As you know a bolt action or pump does deliver more felt recoil than a semi automatic. It is also a trade off between felt recoil and static weight of the rifle. Pack a heavy gun with less kick or a featherweight that knocks your shoulder off ;-)

7mm-08 is hard to beat
In the AR-15 platform the 6.5 Grendel is a good one
or the AR-10 in 308
The Ruger American is a fine little gun I own 3 of them 30-06, 7mm-08 and 243, all are topped with Nikon or Vortex optics.

243 will shoot out to 300 easily. A lot of competition shooters have moved to 243 shoot out to a grand with it. And the kinetic energy is really good with a 115 grain bullet. If your just wanting something bigger a 6.5 creed or a 308.

You were waiting for the last word, and here it is, 7mm-08. Get it in a Browning Micro or something similar. If you get the Browning you can have his name engraved on the bolt.

Agree with Bullie my wife has the browning micro Midas xbolt 243 and if it was threaded I would hunt with it no problem. It’s a nice gun and will last a life time.

My daughter moved up from the 243 to the 7mm-08 when she was 14. She was a little apprehensive at first but once she shot it a couple of times she said she couldn't tell any difference between the two. Her 243 was the H&R single shot and her 7mm-08 is a Remington mod 7.

I shoot a .270wsm Browning A- bolt and love that gun. I had my last name engraved on the bolt and the year I bought it. Then every deer it's harvested I've carved a hoof print onto the stock. When it was a buck I put the number of points it was next to the track.

Yes it's marking the gun but it's my baby and I wanted it to show history. Tell a story of my hunting life. Hand it down to my kid when I go.

I’m a big fan of 30 caliber. Can find ammo anywhere w different choices. Don’t get a super light gun, heavy is steady and won’t develop flinching. Get good glass. Remember “buy once, cry once”. I have every gun my pawpaw and dad had. Who gets rid off guns?

7mm-08. The difference in recoil between a 243 and a 08 is non existent. I would much rather go with a 260 Rem. than the 6.5 Creed. I have yet to understand the fascination with the Creedmor being that the brass is from a caliber that failed miserably.

Browning A-bolt or Tikka 7mm-08. You can load hot or used managed recoil

Vortex optics are hard to beat for the price.

Spot on the Tikka. Unfortunately Browning discontinued the A-Bolt several years ago. The AB3s are junk in my opinion and also do not have an adjustable trigger.

Are you against the AR option ? if not get a 6.8 spc and you are good to go . Adjustable stock and can quickly convert to varmint or .22 for squirrel . If bolt is the way you go as several have stated the .243 / .260 .7 mm 08 are all great .my 10 year old and 13 year old neices took their first bucks with my 7 mm 08 .

I am a browning fan and have been a long time. My new toy is a Remington 700 sps tactical 308 with suppressor. Hard to beat it but I will never sell my A-bolts. I have a 270 medallion my wife bought me and a 7 mag regular A-bolt. Have killed a lot of deer with both. My 270 medallion is my favorite gun. My wife hunts with a x-bolt 243 and she likes it. She has killed 3 deer with it and everyone dropped in their tracks.

I will say the 7mm 08 is hard to beat, I have a Savage 7mm 08 and straight from the box it was very accurate but did need some trigger work to get the grainess out of it
