Lots of discussion in Alabama about implementing antler restrictions on bucks next year. People for it are citing the success of Ms and Ark and the improvements on the bucks harvested. What’s y’all opinion??

I don't think it is related but we are having a terrible year.
By now we should have 16-18 in the book.
We have 2.
We are seeing plenty of bucks and some nice bucks on the cameras at night.
I sure hope the rut gets them moving. Actually where we are (Jefferson/Claiborne county line) they should be chasing by now?

To really improve your deer herd you need to let bucks grow to at least 3 preferably 4 years old .Very few bucks over 3 years old have less than 7 points but a lot of 2 year olds have 7 or more so it's a catch 22 situation because the hunter who passed the 3 year old 6 point still has a tag when the 2 year old 10 point ( future boon & crochet) comes by . Antler points are a good start but if you really want to help your herd learn to age deer on the hoof

I am seeing and killing better bucks as well. I kinda wished we would go to a tagging system as well.

The rules in the Midwest are strict but look at the deer that come from those states that are really strict.

I too am killing better bucks than I did 20 years ago when they started the antler restrictions of 4 point, or better. I agree that for the most part we are shooting a lot of the wrong deer. Age plays a huge roll. Of course, I cannot see as well as I did 20 years ago either, so they have to be better deer for me to see horns.

I have mixed feeling but our club was doing the eight point or better rule and and we got to seeing where small brush type deer but after a couple of years of going strick by the game and fish rules we are seeing better deer.

I am seeing more bucks and they are starting to be better racks, but I know that many couldn’t care less about Game & Fish laws. Small bucks continue to be taken, spotlighting is common. We’re just fortunate to have some good neighbors who are managing their property well.

Sounds like a joke, but I can sure second that!! Almost lost my bifocals trying to trail a hog with a friend the other night...that's a straight up fact!

I agree that antler restrictions have had a positive effect overall. Ethical hunters are passing on younger smaller bucks and allowing them to grow. They are thinking before they shoot. The discussion is taking place. There will always be those people who shoot anything and everything no matter what.
