I guess this happens more often than we realize, but I've never heard of it..

Yep I killed a big 8pt a few years ago that had a 3" pice of horn in his hind quarter had it hit the artery he surely would have died

I had one killed 100 yds from back of my house in wide open pasture one night. Real nice 10pt. Got gored in the lungs. I thought he had been shot but I couldnt figure out how in the hades someone shot him that close to my house and I didnt hear the shot. And it was pouring that night. I had watched this exact deer the afternoon before about 1/2mile away up until dark so I knew he was still walking then. Even called the GW I was so convinced someone shot him. We took him to skinning rack and opened him up to look for bullet and there was nothing but one punctured lung. I knew instantly the deer that did it and killed him a few days later. He was an old mature deer that had a corkscrew dagger on one side.
