Illinois bow hunt Oct 13-15 thread

Postby e_smith06 » Sun Oct 06, 2013 5:24 pm

Ok guys, here is the scoop on my hunt. We will leave out Oct 12.
I am going with a friend that has 2 new leases and 1 lease that he's had for years in Pike County, IL.
He hasn't been able to scout much on the 2 new leases, and that is where he wants me to hunt (with video, to help him see what is on the property). Here in lies the problem.
So, in 3 short days, I will have to establish a pattern, and get set up for a shot. I don't know what to expect, I don't know what the land layout is. We don't have aerial maps to look at. I will be playing this one by ear.
It's not ideal, but who is going to turn down an invite to prime whitetail country?

I believe there are a couple of stands on the property, and I will be taking my ground blind with me.

So, do you guys have any tips you want to send my way? Things to look for? I've never hunted outside of my pine thicket in Houston, MS, so any advice will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance, and cross your fingers for me!

You are limited on time and first hand knowledge however just as firecloud, bullfrog and myself are in the same position you are with our draw hunts for mahannah and twin oaks. Google maps will be you best source for information. Start there

Wishing you the best of luck. Not the best laid out plan, but take what you can get, and enjoy yourself.

Got to Flash Earth's map site. (google to find it) It uses Bing maps and Google maps both, including aerial views which are pretty detailed. You can switch back and forth on the same spot and compare both sets of maps. It will surprise you how much you can learn about the territory from looking at maps. Try Microsoft's Terra Server also. It will let you see earlier versions of maps including some going back many years. It helps you see how much an area has "grown up" over the years so you can better judge the age of the trees or brush. Use the topo feature too.

See my thread on the Mahannah hunt for some info about GPS Hunt, a smart phone app that comes in several versions, including a free version. This app works on your phone WITHOUT any cell or data connections once you download the maps to your phone. It always shows where you are on the map using GPS satellites. Lots of features on the free version and even more on the paid ones. I would not hunt out of state without that app on my phone.

Good luck on the trip and keep us posted with lots of pics.

Will do FC, and that's exactly right Dusty.
I'm sure I won't be doing a lot of sleeping, so when I get there, I will study the aerials really well and try to put together a plan. I will take tons of pictures, and will have the camcorder with me also.

Correction: There are no stands on the new lease that I will be hunting, so all my hunts will be from my blind. That will make it much easier on me for filming. But it also puts me at a disadvantage. Being elevated, you can see further, but hey, I'm gonna make the absolute most out of this trip that I can. Been wanting to go to IL for at least 10 years now.

You need to take at least 2 plot watcher cameras and place them as soon as you get there in previously chosen spots (from satellite images) this will allow you to see what's happening in areas you aren't hunting. Pull cameras after 1st full day and see what's using the other areas, either leave cams in the area or move to new location.

Even though there are no stands there, look closely for signs of where stands were previously. They weren't there by chance, there was a reason. Good luck to you.

Go with your gut feel.

I'd be willing to be that more big buck kills are the result of pure luck (aka "being in right place at right time") than anything else..

Good luck

If its anything like Kansas, find where they are feeding and bedding. Best bushwhacking spots there are.

Totally different kind of hunting than South Mississippi, you'll love it and have the time of your live, whether you kill or not....

10-11-13
Finally arrived in Pittsfield, IL, around 10pm. Collected camera cards and looked at photos for about 2 hours. I'm writing this as I go due to lack of Internet, so bear with me.

We saw several deer as soon as we crossed the MS river into Pike county, and there are corn-fed does here that make our horses at home look small. I'm talking 300 pounders, like 2 grown men will struggle to move her, as in do not try to drag her, you will develop hemorrhoids big. HUGE.

Calling for rain right at daybreak in the AM, with a south wind @ 7mph.
There's a nice 3.5 yr old split g2 buck hanging out close-by. They are already sparring and determining dominance here, and it's only a week and a half into the season.

We will go for a quick hunt in the morning, and do some more scouting on the other 2 leases, and hopefully get on a good deer to focus on. I've got a buck and doe tag, and the Mathews is ready to eat! I've got time for about 4 hours sleep, so g'nite y'all.

Man don't lose that bow whatever you do. I have read they will jump out of an atv. Good luck and show the pictures of the big one you get.

Should've been filming a Scent Away commercial this morning, 2 of those gargantuan does down wind at 5 yards. Never spooked. Saw 4 deer total; 1 before daylight, those 2, then one unidentifiable 200 yards away through some brush. Set up on a pinch point hedgerow on a cut corn field for this afternoon. Just about to head out.

Condensed version of this afternoon hunt: HOT.
Saw 20 horse does, 937 squirrels, and a 150" 10 point chased a doe 30 yards in front of the blind, but it was too dark to see the pins on my sight. Got some decent video of the big does. Can't hardly wait for 5am to get back in there.
