I used to live south of Pittsfield IL. in the Independence community about half way between Pittsfield and Nebo! There are some huge deer in that farm country of Pike Co. I worked up there for three yrs. Good Luck to you on your IL. hunt!

Ok condensed story of today:
No deer this AM.
This afternoon: I moved the blind to the other side of the field so I would have the right wind.
The deer piled in 30 minutes before dark, video camera rolling at this point. 6 point at 250 yards, 8-10 does, another 6 point comes in. I'm having trouble videoing because there's so many deer. Then out of nowhere (20 yards from previous blind location) a 110" 8 point followed by a 120" 8 point. Followed by SAD DADDY 150-160" 10 point with split g3 left side. I'm as calm as a fella can be in that situation, watching from 250 yds. Then the does break and head straight up the hedgerow towards the present location of the blind. Am I really gonna get a shot at this guy?! Seconds are dragging by yet passing so fast. Heart rate 150. More deer have piled in, 20 sets of eyes file past the camera lens at 20-60 yards, sad daddy bringing up the rear. Come closer!! 78 yds, then 71, then 68, then 60... Hey! I can shoot at 60! Now 62, crap he's going away. No time to think! Draw, he's broadside. Heart rate 200. Steady... Pin settles, heart rate 200. squeeze, heart rate 300. The Launchpad lights, arrow arcs, deer doesn't drop? What? Fletchings touched his belly? Heart stops. Sad daddy runs 100 yards away and stops, and begins eating again. Camera still rolling, heart still not beating, haven't breathed in 10 minutes. Heart broken. Will be near his bedding area in the morning, praying to God I get another chance at this once in a lifetime buck.

Man that sucks, just don't think my heart could withstand that kind of pressure. There would have to be an ambulance waiting close by with cardiac equipment on board.
Wishing you more luck today.

Thanks guys this afternoon is the last chance on the corn field. Blind is in good position for the wind and he walked within 30-40 yards of where it is yesterday. But just in case, I have a 60 yard pin now. I will have time for a morning hunt, but if all goes well today, I can sleep in tomorrow before the long drive home.

This AM hunt I had a 120" 8 point (guessing) came by my stand at 18 yards running
Mach 3 + 17 mph. He had his nose on the ground. Within 2 weeks it will be unreal up here. Will be coming back next year around first week of November

Please, don't say your coming home empty handed. I was hoping for pictures of the Mac Daddy.

I've still got this evening in the corn and one more morning sit, then I'm leaving. Fingers crossed!

Well, I'm coming home empty handed. Or as Chad Bragg says, eating a tag sandwich. But I'm coming home with some excellent memories, even better video, and one epic miss on a 150" beast that will fuel the fire to come back next year. If anyone wants a hunt in Pike County for a surprisingly reasonable price, ill give you his number.

Sounds great, wish you had scored. But the memories will last a lot longer than the mount on the wall. I may need that number. I need to treat myself to a special gift for my 62nd birthday.

Saw 20 horse does, 937 squirrels, and a 150" 10 point chased a doe 30 yards in front of the blind, but it was too dark to see the pins on my sight. Got some decent video of the big does. Can't hardly wait for 5am to get back in there.

That's the best thing about shooting a traditional bow instinctively without sights. As long as You can see the target you can hit it. I have never used a sight on my recurve in 45 years. Buy a traditional bow before your next hunting trip. You wont regret it

Hope big boys come out in the daylight for you!

Thanks guys. Rusty told me to not throw my tag away; that I might get to come back after all the booked hunts are over!

His number is (217) 370-9461, ask for Rusty. Tell him Eric sent you. You won't regret going I can promise you that, and at 1/3 the price of outfitters in the same area.

I need 3 guys to book and come hunt with me next year in Pike County, IL. With a group of 4, we can get an awesome discount. I'm talking PRIME trophy buck country, 5 day peak rut hunt for less than 2k/hunter. Message me for further details. Gonna shoot for Nov 3-8...
