Opening day hunt

Postby gtk » Sat Mar 16, 2013 8:17 pm

I actually got up before daylight , and was at the farm before sunup. I didn't hear any gobbling so I took off walking. I spooked a few hens off the roost at 7:45, no gobbler was with them. My nephew hunted the other end of the farm and spooked a hen off the roost around 8:00.

I finally got one to gobble at me about 200 yards off. I set up decoys and called, but it never would come to me. After about 30 minutes of listening him gobble, I decided to head to him. The closer I got, the more it sounded like a hunter doing a terrible job of gobbling. I was getting close, and nervous. In hit the edge of a field and immediately saw him. All I could see was his head over the crest of the hill.

I hit the ground and scooted back in the woods, and tried sneaking up on him. Finally got within 20 yards , him gobbling every other step. I thru my gun up, then noticed something wasn't right. The turkey was brown & white. He saw me and started strutting right to me. Dang turkey had to be someone's pet! That turkey followed me about 75 yards. :smash:  I went home after that

I had a similar hunt years ago. Got permission to go to a guys camp I had never been to. I was walking and calling and struck a gobble, set up and called. He answered every call but wouldn't budge. After an hour I couldn't take it any longer and had to take a peek. I snuck up the hill and peeked over to see a tame gobbler in a guys yard. Felt like an idiot and hoped no body was home filming the episode.
