You hit the woods in the morning. You don't hear any gobbling first thing, so you start hiking and calling.

The Tom's have had plenty of time to fly down and get with the hens. Finally you get one to gobble, and he sounds like he is several hundred yards off.

Do you go sit tight and try to coax him to you ? Do go to him? How close do you try and get to him before calling again?

I get as close as I can before calling again on places where I know the land well enough to make sure there is enough cover so I won't spook him. A new place I'm not very familiar with I won't get as tight on him because I don't know how good of cover I have between me and him.

Also the later into spring it gets the closer you can get because the woods are green with new leaves and better cover.

I'll push him pretty close, then back off call a couple times and shut up. If he thinks you're coming and back off he can't take it.

When I feel like if I take one more step closer I'm gonna spook him, I take the step and sit down

The distance doesnt bother me near as much as obstacles that could be between him and me. If there arent any then I try to work him from where I am.
