opening day

Postby sidog » Sat Mar 29, 2014 9:31 am

I had turkeys gobbling in the distance all morning and none close enough to set up on so I went home and took of all my gear and I walked outside and heard two gobble pretty close. I scrambled to get my stuff together and went close to where I thought they were and as soon as I yelped they started coming from behind me. I had to turn around and had no cover so when they came in they saw me and got nervous so I shot the one with a full fan but he was just a big jake he had 5"+ beard and nubs for spurs. He had a big body and will make good nuggets!

I slice the breast meat about 1/2" thick and hammer it a little, dip in egg-milk mix flour and fry with Jalapeno salt and a few other basic seasonings. Make some gravy and cat head biscuits and belly up! :)

Here they are legal any bearded turkey including hens are fair game. You can usually tell a Jake by his tail fan the middle feathers will be longer but sometimes the ones that are from an early hatch will have a full fan ? I haven't killed a jake in many years but this one was impersonating a grown Tom in a cactus patch and got smoked!

Jakes are legal for youth hunters under the age of 15, but for adult hunters the bird has to have at least a six (6) inch beard or one of these other characteristics:
1. A tail fan that has an unbroken, rounded contour to the outer perimeter of the tail feathers
2. Spurs at least 1/2 inch long or
3. the 9th and 10th primary wing feathers with white barring extending to the outer tips of the feathers.
