I've been seeing lots of birds and I'm ready for them to start acting up ! These were in my back yard.

I have not turkey hunted in several years. While I like it, I am just not crazy about it like I am deer hunting. But with all the turkeys I have seen during deer season, I am thinking about giving it a go again. Plus both these boys are wanting to go, so it is time to take the kids and help them get one!

My Son in law has just got into hunting kind of later than most hunters (26yrs old) but he's crazy about it now. He hunted with me on my place and killed 3 deer this season and we've been varmint hunting and he's crazy about that too. I'm going to take him turkey hunting this spring and I'm looking forward to calling his first bird for him! I enjoy calling turkeys for other people as much or more than I do killing them. The calling is the fun part!

I have noticed as I get older the thrill is in getting others hooked on hunting. Helping. Being there when they connect.

I think you are right LadyHunter, I still love to get out in the woods hunting but am just as happy seeing someone with me get a deer or turkey as me getting it myself.
I love deer hunting but turkey hunting has always been my passion, just can't chase them as hard as I once did.

Is it too early to start trying to use locator calls?

I say yes and I never call to the birds till turkey season starts, when I'm out scouting I just watch and listen.

The turkeys here have been separated lately and I'm just now starting to see Toms with hens together feeding. And to answer your question I agree with no calling until your ready to hunt.

I'm just trying to see if there are any birds on the property, as I don't have a ton of time to scout. Still a bad idea?

I wouldn't do any locater callin,,, but you can go out in the mornings and listen... also walk your roads lookin for tracks after a rain... but I wouldn't make any type of calls to the birds until its time to get after them,, they will get tight beaked easy if your in a pressured area....
