Fridays Hunt

I went to the cabin thurs eve, in time to hear some fly up to roost fairly close to the cabin.

Got up Fri morn to a light rain. I headed towards where I heard them roost, and what I thought was 150 yards or so to their roosting spot, ended up being only about 30 yards from the cabin. I busted turkeys out everywhere..

So I walk on down to the field, and the bottom falls out. I'm leaning against bwm's box stand on the edge of a field, trying to stay dry, and I give a yelp just to see if anything answers. Well, nothing answered, but hens started flying down everywhere, landing in the field about 40 yards from me, and all I have for cover is a box stand.

I'm standing there trying to figure out what to do, and a few minutes later the tom gobbles from the tree. I try to sneak closer to the edge of the field to get better cover, and the hens busted me but didn't run off. Then the tom flys down into the field, and stays 75 yards away, never giving me a shot. If i would have been thinking quickly, I should have run the hens out of the field before the tom flew down, and then set up my decoys to draw him in. After fooling with him for a while, I knew he wasn't going to leave the hens.. He never gobbled again.

I hit the other end of the field, and saw about 10 hens and a gobbler. Again, I never could get them do do anything.. This tom would gobble every once in a while, but would not leave the hens, and the hens were not comign out of the middle of the field.

I think it was a combination of hard rain & cool weather, but they were just not cooperating !

I spend the rest of the day chilled to the bone from getting drenched.. Maybe in another week they will be more responsive

At least you did find and see birds good luck with them.

Don't think I'm going again till next week and let the place I like to hunt dry out some...just to much water.
