Dr. Seuss Goes Hunting

Postby FireCloud » Thu Feb 17, 2011 10:06 pm

I'm going to the South Hunt, I am, I am
Early in the morning, it's green eggs and ham.
Served at the deer camp, green eggs and ham,
Think I'll skip breakfast, I am, I am.

Then unload the dogs, who howl and bark,
They are ready to go; the dogs howl and bark.
As the early dawn chases the dark,
We enter the woods; the dogs howl and bark.

Locked and loaded we scan each tree,
Looking for squirrels, but none we see.
None we see, none we see,
Do squirrels really live in a tree?

The hounds all start to howl and jump
Around a red oak, they jump on the trunk,
And jump and jump, all over the trunk.
Barking and howling, the dogs all jump.

We shake bushes and vines to make some noise,
There he is! says one of the boys.
Boom! goes a gun, the squirrel falls dead,
Hitting a dog on top of the head.

One, two, three. Out of the tree,
Six, five, four. Wait there's more!
Seven, eight, nine, the hunting is fine,
Twelve, eleven, ten. It's time to go in.

Lunch is served, but no green eggs and ham,
I'm very glad, I am, I am! No green eggs and ham!
Bar-b-que, beans, slaw, and pink drink,
Why do they serve green eggs and pink drink?

This group is strange, but here's what I think,
Who eats green eggs and drinks pink drink?
And gives kids a chance to do what they love?
This special group called "A Hunt Above!"

Thanks for the compliments. I wrote it primarily for the practice of doing creative writing. My thoughts were many on the forum (other than me!) might have grandkids who would enjoy some hunting stories in a format they are familiar with. Kids need outdoor related material in order to help kindle an interest in hunting, fishing, etc. Unfortunately most writers don't try to do children's material and especially not with any positive theme about hunting. Who knows, I might write a children's book or two one day.
