What caliber primitive weapon should I get.

I've been debating on which type of primitive weapon (single shot rifle) I should get. 35 Whelen, 44, 444, or 45-70. What are their pros and cons. Living in South MS I don't have many long shots, but something with a flat trajectory would be good. I'd appreciate yalls help.

even though none of the weapons you mentioned are "primitive" but by MS Law can be used I would have to say the 35 Whelen would be the most accurate at any range.

I hunt with a flintlock most of the time but given your choices I'd go with the 45/70: 35 Whelen: 444 Marlin then the 44 mag in that order.
My handi rifle 45/70 is good past 200 yards with a 300 gr hollowpoint I handload
I'm sure others will let you know their opinions as well.

If you typically shoot factory ammo, I'd go 35 Whelen unless you get a good deal on the 45/70 or 444. If you reload, 45/70.

My one piece recurve bow has a nice flat trajectory and if you don't have many long shots, it will do just fine..plus it actually IS a primitive weapon. Ton's of fun to shoot, cheap to own and enjoy, doesn't kick like a mule, plus you can hunt with it every single day of the deer season! It shoots a 125 grain projectile with plenty of punch to let the air of a deer.

Best of all, when that big buck walks out in front of you during a time when the "primitive" weapons you list are restricted to "doe only" you don't have to whine about having to let him walk. You can legally ground check him.

Not trying to change your mind...just saying. :W:

35 Whelen, 200gr TSX at nearly 3K fps, what is there not to love.

The recoil from a Handi is what is not to love
3000fps is screaming

Well there is recoil. It is very manageable in a TC, have not tried it in a handi. I threaded the barrel on my wife's encore and screwed a big ol muzzle brake on it. It is about like shooting a 243 so long as you wear hearing protection.

I may need some instructions from you Ebo
My 45/70 is only around 2200 fps and with a 300 gr bullet and You know darn well when you pull the trigger
target or deer

I use a 45/70 handi and have had good luck with it at close range. I hear the 35 is more accurate and shoots flatter with slightly less recoil, so that seams like the obvious choice..but I love my 45

Are you admitting to being recoil sensitive :stir: The 35 is a semi violent short recoil, so long as the muzzle does not flip you are good to go. That extra 100 grs of bullet you are chunking out of that thing adds substantially to recoil.

BTW I think we are square on topic. Recoil is one of the factors to consider when choosing a chambering.

.35 whelen is the way to go !! I have a H&R handi and the recoil is no big deal at all. no worse than my .270 , certainly no worse than my 7mm mag.

For bullet selection I'd go with the 45-70...from roundball clear up to a 600 gr. bullet can be used.
