Very sad, prayers for family and friends.

Itawamba County, Miss (WTVA) -- An officer with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks died after being struck by a car Friday night.

Master Sgt. John Collum, 56, was investigating a reported prowler near his home north of Fulton along the John Rankin Highway when his was hit and killed. The accident happened around 10 p.m.

A neighbor had called Collum to report the prowler and was on the phone with Collum when he was hit. Sheriff Chris Dickinson says the neighbor also witnessed the accident.

Dickinson said the 19-year-old driver of the car was speeding. "the vehicle skidded for 300 feet before it stopped," said Dickinson. "There will be charges, they will be severe."

Dickinson said three other people were in the car at the time. They do not face any charges.

Dickinson said it is not uncommon for wildlife officers to assist his deputies. He called Collum a good friend and a great officer.

"We lost a fine law enforcement officer last night, and a finer man."

Prayers for all involved. But really need to hear the full story. Evidently the officer was a friend of my step son, and it seems that the youth was speeding. But why would a trained law enforcement officer be standing in a highway wearing green fatigues and no light, or visible green or orange vest. Sounds like a tragic accident for all involved. The facts will determine the judgement.
