What will be your most popular hunting caliber

Postby Spitfire » Thu Mar 08, 2012 11:21 am

Just to see what caliber you guys think is best and why ? I absolutely love the bigger calibers from .54 on up as i do most of my hunting with roundball and almost always at ranges under 130yrds !

I'm kinda partial to the .54 caliber. Those big roundballs let out alot of air and blood real fast.

I would have to say that .45/70 would be my favorite, but if I had a .35 Whelen or a .35 Remington single shot I would definately use one of those. Maybe even the .358 winchester if there was a barrel for it. The .444 Marlin is a good primitive weapon caliber too. Can't forget the .44 mag either. Heck, if you had a barrel in 458 WM that would make a fine primitive weapon gun. The choices are mind boggling.

My favorite would be the 44 mag... simply because I love shooting that gun!! I also have a 30/30 that I like. But for the caliber I prefer that's the 44 mag, It works well for me

 LAW BREAKER!!!!! :nono:

We are talking PRIMITIVE WEAPONS here!!! Not modern weapons!!! The .30/30 is in no shape, form, or fashion legal for our primitive weapon season. You had better hope I never see you shooting deer with that gun during PW season. I am gonna call that 1-800 Tellonthepoacher number...

 Two admitted poachers in a row. The .22 isn't a legal PW round either. I am thinking it might make you a bad person if you shoot deer with illegal calibers.

ok, the original post asked about 'Most Popular Hunting Caliber' in the primative weapons list. Nothing said about deer hunting. Also I might mention that since the .22 short is the oldest rimfire cartridge, it might be considered "primative". :stir: :stir:

Since Spitfires post mentions roundballs and 54 caliber I am thinking he means a real primitive weapon.

Don't feel bad LH , i love the old single shots as well ! Do some hunting with a MH 577/450 which is about the same ballisticly as your 45/70 and a Snider 577 carbine .

Spitfire, a buddy of mine had a nice Snider that he sold one day cheap because he couldn't find ammo. Wish I'd known he was going to.

Yeah schoolmarm, you don't buy ammo for them you make it yourself ! I'm stand corrected here but you can use 24 gauge brass shotshells to fashion snider and 577/450 brass. Pity you could'nt buy that rifle, Very sweet and accurate shooting little beasties !

Just shipping alone would run the price way up there. One would have to cherish those rounds.

The .50 caliber with a roundball or 320 grain REAL bullet was the biggest caliber I've hunted with. I was starting to look at .54s though. In black powder bigger seems to be better. :)

Ironwood yes up to a piont , once you go past .62 cal you start losing velocity and you add to the already rainbow like trajectory ! I'd love to have rifles in 12, 10 or 8 bore but don't think they'll make practical hunting rifles.

With some of the critters you all have running around down there an 8 bore might come in handy in certain instances. Would fare better than me standing there with my little .40 caliber longrifle. :)

I don't know Quigley, that 96 grain ball moving at a little over 1900 fps isn't a slouch. :) I've killed hogs with less. :) You will, like any other time, just have to be cool and wait for your shot. With hogs it's all about hitting them right with the first shot. Sorry if I've drifted a little of topic. :)
