Hummingbird Migration

The hummingbirds are starting to migrate south. I've only had a pair of hummers here all summer, but that's all changed. Hard to tell just how many are visiting my feeders but right now probably 10 or 12. Before the migration is over there should be somewhere around 50 visiting my feeders.

Here's a couple of photos I've taken of them this migration.

I have the same feeders you have on my front porch. I keep expecting for one to stick me in the head with its beek. Those birds are can be vicious towards each other.

Great pics!

Thanks, LazyGhost, Stillhunter, Ree, and Honey Bee. I really enjoy the migration. Right now I have 5 feeders going. As more hummers arrive I'll add some more. It's sure something to stand out there amid them. What an uproar of humming, chirping, and squealing at one another. Early morning is a riot!

This is the part I enjoy the most.

gtk, I really enjoy standing out by the feeders in the early morning. What a racket! You might even try putting a little dyed sugar water in the palm of your hand and holding it out to the hummers. I have some little tube feeders that I hold out to them. At first they are reluctant to feed from it. Soon they will be lining up to get at it. I've had two at a time with their bill in that little hole in the feeder while I was holding the feeder out to them.

Nice pics Ironwood, thanks for sharing. I have quite a few around my house right now. I don't have any feeders, but do have "cannons" planted in the back flower beds and they seem to love them. :)

Thank you BIGERN.

Gtk that must be fun. I usually bring a feeder inside to fill it. When I stand out around the feeders sometimes a hummer will come up to within 18 inches or so and really check me out.

Ut-Oh Looks like the fun is over for now. Almost all the the hummers have gone on south. My sister called me yesterday to ask if I had any hummers. She said hers were all gone. I think I only have 3 or 4 coming to the feeders this morning. That's way down from the 40 or 50 I estimated coming to the feeders Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. As I remember the hummers all left early last year. We had a very cold winter too....Got down to 15° one night and it snowed three times! :(

all ours are about gone... never more than two at a time now, where three weeks ago we would have 15-20 at any one time.
