Someone set me straight.

Postby terry08 » Tue May 02, 2017 4:41 pm

For years my pond was filled with goggle eye. Then I put the Bass in a couple years ago, and they have spawned and multiplied. One time several years ago, I caught two nice blue gill, but never again. By the way I released them. This afternoon, I caught several of these, biting like crazy. Not big mouths like the sun perch. If they are blue gill, they are a quarter to half pounds each. What's your opinion.

Green sunfish or a hybrid green sunfish/bluegill my best semi-educated guess.

I've been told they're hybrid bluegill by a fisheries agent so that's what I call them.

I caught about 10 lbs in thirty minutes. Gave them to a friend up the road. Who was glad to have them. His wife was scared to clean them, said she had never seen bream that big lol.
I also caught a nice cat, that I released. The pond must be doing well.

Ranger, that's goggle eye. Aka Shell cracker, or red ear by some.

Green Sunfish is what we've always called them. Pretty tasty especially if you batter them in pancake batter!

I meant to say not big mouths like the sun perch have. The pound has always been full of sun perch. Just wondering if the Bass, took care of them and blue gill took their place. Also first cat I have caught in years.

Terry did you stock bream/perch when you stocked bass?

buckcrazy, when I had the pond dug. I put 600 channel cat in. Nothing else, a few weeks later we counted 85 dead after a big rain. The supplier gave us 600 more. Never put bream or bass. Then one day caught two nice blue gill, and released them. Never caught any Catfish after a year. The pond has nearly dried up several times. I caught some bass and put them in a couple years ago, but after last summers draught figured nothing could survive in a foot of water. But the Bass made it somehow and spawned. Have caught several small ones and the big ones that I put in. It has always been full of sun perch. After researching, I think I now have hybrid bream. Cross between blue gill and green sun perch. The guy I gave them to said they were the best he had ever tasted and will take all I can bring him
