Thur Morning Oct 11

This morning was a good morning to be in the north creek stand. A little cool, but not cold. There was a fine haze/fog as I walked to the stand but the day dawn clear and the sun started to come up. The wind was still.

I got my camera out and turned it on so if a saw a bird or squirrel or something I was interested in I might get a few pic. My new camera has a "sleep" type mode that it will stay in for a long time.

The morning was fairly quiet. A little before 9 I saw the does with the spotted twins easing in from behind me to my left. I knew I was going to give her a free pass so I eased my camera up instead. She was watching me so I didn't really focus and mess with settings I just more or less just pointed and shot. I still got some pretty good pic, and the babies are starting to lose their spots. There was another doe and baby or yearling holding back in the thick bushes. After taking so pic of her and the twins and letting them ease off I put the camera down eased my bow up and quietly stood to try to get a shot at the other does.

They stayed mostly behind me and just out of range in the trees. I never got a clear shot and never saw more than just parts of them at times. Eventually they all fed down the creek from me.

I stayed in the stand until about 9:45 when I decided it was time for some coffee. I use a climbing sling for my bow so I snapped that on, got my back pack and unhooked form the tree. As I started to climb down... I saw her... the big black hog, this time with 6 little pigs. Well I cheated according to state law. I took a couple of shots at her with my pistol. She is one big sow and while I know I hit her I doubt I did much damage. I will know later I guess. She was on the opposite side of the creek from me.

I will be back there for the afternoon hunt if all goes well.

Am I wrong? Or doesn't the law state it is illegal to have a firearm on your person during any bow season.

Terry I made mention of that fact in my original post. I carry my pistol for my safety. I am a woman hunting alone in a very rural area. I have hogs and coyotes on this property and I go in and out in the dark. The property is thick, and there is no phone service except in spots. So yes I have my pistol.

I also have never killed a deer in an illegal manner and have no intention of doing so now.

Nice pics Ladyhunter, just remember that the law doesn't exempt you because you are a female, although it should. A young lady was given a citation last year for having a 22 cal hand gun while bow hunting not far from my place. The judge fined her $ 325.00.

I know Terry and I am aware of that every time I go into the woods. But if and when that happens I will have to man up and deal with it. I only use it when hunting this place, for the reason mentioned and some others. When I hunt Madison or the main club we hunt on I don't. I appreciate your being concerned. But that pistol is the compromise that we reached here in order for me to bow hunt that property alone.
