The SKY BOX!!!

Postby chadbragg » Fri Aug 26, 2011 5:30 pm

Here is day 1 of my build. I am making it 5'x7' and 14' up in the air... Windows should be app 17.5' high. I worked on it for about 8 hrs today, 4 of which was gathering the materials. I am using 95% reclaimed material so there is alot of nail pulling and such. I have everything that I need besides my windows and I have a total cost of $36 (siding, nails, & screws) in it so far.

Looking good, Chad. It's a lot of hard work but you are going to really enjoy the space in a 5 x 7 shooting house. I absolutely love mine even though it is not fully completed just yet.

I like your split stairs with a landing midway. I have been thinking of building mine that way too. I'd enjoy your sharing any ideas on how you plan to do do your windows and doors. Mine is a bow hunting stand, so I have four windows that are 'house sized' framed up, on on each side. I've begun putting the weathered cypress wood on the exterior and my roof will be recycled tin from a skinning rack roof.

Here is what mine looked like 10 days ago.

Not exactally sure yet on the windows, but I'm thinking I'm gonna have them 12" by about 3'. I'm thinking to cut 1/2" PVC and make "runners" for them to slide in. I will be insulating it with 1.5" blueboard insulation.

Chad, you could also take some dimensional 1x and cut 2 pane thickness grooves about 3/8" apart centering the 1x about a 1/4" deep for the bottom and side rails and 1/2" deep on the top rails. Use 2 panes cut 1" longer than 1/2 the width of your fishing opening. Cut your panes 1/4" taller than the finished opening. Stick in opening top first, lift up until you can drop it into the bottom rail. Top and bottom 1/4" of pane is captured by the rails. Use 1/2" adhesive backed weather stripping between the two panes in the middle of your opening by attaching to one of them 1" from edge. If you use the same railing with the 1/4" deep notches for your verticals it will give you a nice tight closing fit to keep out the cold air kinda like shower doors. The last set of runners I made I also cut a bevel right up to the outside groove to give that ledge a drip fall.

Looking good so far!

I was afraid the wood would swell or warp. I may look into doing that way though. That's exactly what I am looking to do.

You are moving right along, Chad. And it's motivating me to get busy and finish mine even though it is way too hot for me to want to be working in the woods. I cut some more cedar plank siding and put it on mine today after I got off from work.

I started putting the siding on today. I am hoping I can finish it with one more work day.
