Hunting With Jiggs

Postby FireCloud » Sat Oct 29, 2011 11:22 pm

I don't have time to write much on this subject and will defer to the President of the QSMA since it was his hunt, his camp, and his dog, but I do want to say a couple of things. Bullie can put in photos on this thread and write more on the full details if that is his choice.

This morning I got an opportunity for the first time to see Buille's 2 year old mountain cur named Jiggs tree squirrels for Bullie, MIB, and myself to shoot. Jiggs is one very smart and energetic squirrel dog who did a great job! In a 4 1/2 hour hunt she roamed a total distance of almost 13 miles. She was still plenty eager to keep hunting when he leashed her for the trip back to the camp at lunch.

I lost track of the number of times she treed but it was easily at least a dozen or more times. We were able to dislodge at least 7 of the squirrels and make them move. The others were able to hole up in the timber and escape death. Of the seven we did see, we dropped four of them to the ground for Jiggs. Bullie can explain why the other three were not brought down for the dog.

I've dog hunted a lot for squirrels in the past 45 years and in my opinion Jiggs did not "miss" a single tree. She did an outstanding job of working out the scent trail and when she did tree, there was actually a squirrel waiting in the tree. Since we verified that by shooting or seeing the squirrels in the tree she was on seven out of twelve times, I am confident she correctly treed in all the other cases too.

I gotta like a 100% success ratio squirrel dog! :ylsuper: If you like to squirrel hunt and want to have some good fun, do a hunt with Jiggs! You will be impressed. I was!

Thanks for the kind words Firecloud. Jiggs is coming along pretty good. It is alot of work to start a squirrel dog from a puppy but I am really starting to reap the rewards resulting from my time invested.

We had a fine time. I enjoyed the visiting and the bow shooting as much as the time we spent in the woods. MIB and Firecloud are two cool folks to hang around.

Jiggs was telling on this one. MIB was trying hard to find it for her in all the leaves.

That's great Bullie. I can't wait for mine to start hammering them like that. She's lightly started, but needs a lot more work.

Sounds good VA. Maybe we can get GTK to tag along too.

I am busy this weekend too. Dalton is competing for the National Championship this Saturday. :ylsuper: :ylsuper:

Dang a silly pine goat!!! Just holla anytime you wanna go. I always need shooters. 4 people is really the minimum for a good hunt. It only gets better with more folks.
