Monday Oct 15... continuing all week

I was a little later getting to the stand than I wanted to be, but had to be sure kids were up and doing what they needed to do.
Lunar table said 6:39 am to 7:39 am, and that today was a good day! I didn't see anything, after 8 the wind begin to pick up and was from the wrong direction, stayed till about 9:30.

Afternoon hunt started a little windy but the wind stilled about 5. Was a cooler afternoon. Did not see anything. It may be time to switch stands for a while,

Tuesday Afternoon

I had a lot going on today so did not hunt the morning. I had to take the kids to the Court appointed Dr appointment, and met with the lawyer. All after 2. It was close to 4 when we got home. I decided to hunt an area here on the farm that While I have a stand I have never hunted.
A number of years ago we fenced off an area to dedicate to wildlife. It has an open field area that we plant year round, a open pasture type small area, and a heavy wooded area between, with a water source. I have a ladder stand there and a small box stand for Doug. Neither of us has ever hunted it.

I walked from the house, across the pasture, trying to keep the horses from seeing me and following. I bumped two bucks cutting through a wooded area in the pasture, one good older buck with heavy mass and a younger buck, good spread but not as heavy. I was shocked. Tradition says that deer will not feed near horses but these were just yards from them.

I eased on into the stand and got ready.Within 30 minutes I saw the smaller buck ease out of the pasture woods and cross the opening to the area I was in. I was standing waiting, but he crossed to far below me and went into the wooded strip. I stayed standing hoping he would come into the food plot, but no such luck.

No more than 15 minutes later a doe and small spotted fawn came around the pond damn and under the fence into the food plot. They fed around and the fawn played. They stayed in the food plot the better part of an hour. Feeding in and out.

I waited thinking the buck might reappear but he did not. Right at dark the horses left the barn and came to the pond to drink. So I got down and took the trail to the barn.

It was exciting to see deer like that on my own farm. My father in law would have loved it, it was something he hoped would happen one day. When he first indulged his very young new daughter in law by letting her tag along hunting ,deer were few and far between. We used to drive for hours just to hope to see a deer. He would have been thrilled that the love of hunting he helped instill in me has driven us to set aside a part of the farm for wildlife.

Nice story. You are going to harvest the big racked "fruits of your labor" it sounds like. As far as the horses, we have a bunch and I think as the deer numbers have increased, the horses have gotten more used to them and vice versa. The horses used to throw their heads up when they spotted a deer. Now they might only lift it up a little. Yes, I can remember when if we saw a deer on our place, we got excited even if it was a small doe. Yesterday I walked down our driveway and then down the gravel road for a bit. As soon as I got on the road, 3 deer ran from it back across our hayfield. Then 3 more came loping across the hayfield toward the road. Then 5 more came across the hayfield. A lot of deer, but I still get fired up when I see them.

Thanks Flipper. I intend to hunt there again this afternoon, though the wind is a bit high. If it gets to bad I can just walk back to the house. It is a good problem to be seeing deer and have a hard time deciding where to hunt. Last year I could not even see a deer. I am still hoping to get one with my bow, and once the spots get off of some of these babies, its game on!! I can not believe how many I am still seeing with spots

I hunted the farm stand again on Wednesday Afternoon. The wind was high, really to high. About 6:00 the wind lay to just a slight wind from time to time. At about 6:30 I saw 6, seeming to be does and yearlings, fawns come into the bottom pasture to the pond. That is to far for even a gun shot, but I watched them play and drink, then they fed up the opposite hill in to the oaks to eat acorns. At last light one doe and fawn came into the bottom of the food plot. To dark to shoot. But its nice to know they are there.... hunting from the house!!! LOL

Terry I sat in the stand and kicked myself for forgetting it. They were to far to shoot even with a gun let alone a bow, but with a zoom lens would have made some great pics! I was so amazed at what has been going on in my back pasture and I was so unaware!! LOL

Didn't hunt on Friday. Saturday went to the north creek stand. Wind was calm, and the temps were in the low 70s and dropped before dark. Skeeters were bad, had to use the thermacell.
Did not see anything except an armadillo.
