.444 ammunition & scope

Postby MSWE » Sat Dec 01, 2012 12:15 pm

I turned 30 on November 28, and my parents purchased me a H&R Handi-Rifle .444 to celebrate. I am currently using my Mossberg bolt action 30-06 for rifle season, but I am excited to use my .444 for the upcoming primitive weapon season. However, before I can hunt with my .444 I need to purchase both ammunition, and a scope.

Here is the ammunition that I am considering,

(I am open to any suggestions for a better round for Whitetail. I am also interested in using my .444 to hunt wild hog if anyone has a round suggestion.)

I have no idea what scope to purchase, but I am looking for a 3-9x40mm for less than $200.

I know... I plan to continue using my 30-06 for the remainder of the rifle season, but I plan on using my .444 for the upcoming primitive weapon season. I know a man who sells boxes of 260 grain .444 bullets for $33 each, but I really want the lower grain 225 bullet.

The 260 will carry more power at longer ranges

I know a lot of folks have used the Hornady Leverevolution in 265g with a lot of success. If you want to stay with the 225g, you may want to get into reloading at those prices.

Those Barnes TSX bullets are what make that box so expensive...good bullets though. If you decide to use it more, you could buy the Remington's or Hornady's to play with.
Were me...I'd look into reloading if it were gonna get shot more than a couple times a year.

You've got that right Spit. ;)
I've some 320 gr. wide flat point gas checked bullets I cast here at the house that I'd like to try out in that thing. ;)
