Inoculate?

Postby e_smith06 » Sat Aug 24, 2013 11:07 pm

I have decided to plant oats, rye grass, and some type of clover this year.
However, in my reading, i saw something about inoculating the clover.
I don't understand this, can someone shed some light?

Inoculations is basically placing naturally occurring bacteria on the seed that helps the plant fixate nitrogen from the air and into the soil. (I forget the name of it) there several types of inoculants out there, some are for different for the different clovers, peas, peanuts, and soybeans. They do help and help the most in areas that have never had these crops or have been under water for several months ( like old cotton ground, rice fields, and others. ) wax seed in Columbus has several types that can be applied to the seed that mixed with water them applied. Some clovers are sold pre-inoculated but be careful with those as it last a few months.

And from more reading, I see that salts from some fertilizers can actually inhibit the inoculated clover from holding the nitrogen. Confused! lol

Yea Ammonium Nitrate can be very hard on soil too. It's best to do soil tests and know what shape it's in before you go buy a bunch clover.
