'13 Bow Season

'13 Bow Season

Postby e_smith06 » Wed Oct 02, 2013 10:44 pm

Took a doe an hour and a half into season from my ground blind. Managed to get it all on video- pats self on the back. It's not so easy to do; film and hunt at the same time.
Will post a link when I get a YouTube channel set up.

Oct 2 - saw a doe this afternoon but she never presented a shot. A buddy of mine hammered a doe about 400 yards from me and after a lengthy tracking job, we found her, got her dressed, and I'm finally showered, fed, and relaxing. Going to run camera for a friend in the AM so ill try and get some sleep. It's been so hot and humid this week, bring on the cooler temps!

Signing off for now. Good luck and be safe!

0730am Oct 3 - running video for my buddy Casey this morning. No deer yet; just a overly hyper squirrel , but it's early yet. Stay tuned.

Didn't see any deer while we were on stand, but in typical fashion, a big doe was 30 yards from the truck as we were walking out. Forecasted 85* this afternoon, so were gonna sit the hunt out and wait on the cooler weather in a few days. 'Til next time-

10-17-13
68* West wind
My buddy and I sat in a ground blind from 230 until dark in a prime spot in a corner of a bean field this evening. The main trail being 30 yards to our left, wind hitting us in the nose. Blind brushed in really well. Camera is set up, Casey is ready to let an arrow fly today.

But we saw 0 deer, and when we left a huge full moon is coming up. No wonder we didn't see anything.

10-22-13 PM hunt
67* wind WNW @ 5-10
I sat in my climber right off of my food plot that is adjacent to one of the creeks. I have sufficient front and back cover, and am really liking this set up. I have acorns all along the creek bank, and the food plot looks great! In years past this plot always produces deer. I have not pressured this area much but the deer just aren't showing up. I saw a spotted fawn today, it ran through the plot S to N this afternoon. I never saw another deer which is a little odd, I figured mother wouldn't be far from her fawn. Maybe they will begin using the plot once the acorns are gone, and the leaves are gone allowing us to see further into the woods. I work Wednesday an Thursday, but I'm looking forward to the weekends hunts.

10-28 AM hunt

Sat from daylight until 10am on a ridgeline mixed with pine and hardwoods. Heard one behind me around 0830, couldn't see it because of the leaves. Found some fresh scrapes along the ridge walking out.

PM hunt
68* ssw wind
Sat in a blind on a bean field, saw one spike buck about dusk at 150yards.

10-29 AM hunt 59* SE wind
Saw a doe @0830 - 48 yards and feeding away, she must've been bedded and stood up when I saw her because I never saw her come in. Just like magic she was there. Had what sounded like a mature deer blow a couple hundred yards upwind of me, never saw it. Wishing it would cool off some.

Nov 9 AM hunt 44* ESE wind
Jumped a deer walking in. Had 2 does get downwind of me and spooked off. 45 minutes later, I had one blow at me from downwind. I take scent control very seriously and I'm beginning to think something is wrong.

Nov 10 AM hunt 49* NNW wind
Sat in my ground blind until 9am, no deer seen. Jumped one walking out.

Nov 11 PM hunt 68* WNW wind
Sat in my climber on the creek bottom food plot. Had 3 big does and 2 yearlings come in at 4:50, staying just inside the woods. The lead doe mustve sensed something was out of place because they turned and slowly walked back the way they came. No other deer seen. Gonna get cold tomorrow so maybe it will be better.

Nov 13 AM hunt
24* NNE wind 9mph
Sat in my ground blind, on a ridge overlooking 2 thick hollers with big timber behind me. This ridge runs between 2 of my food plots. While texting chadbragg talking about all the wildlife he is seeing, about 8:40 I finally see movement, it's a button buck about 100 yards away.
This was the only deer seen, but I did see 2 boxer bulldogs. Looking forward to the evening hunt.

This stand will be excellent during the rut.

Hunt #15 (minus my 6 IL hunts)
Nov 13 PM hunt 48* NNE wind @ 4mph
Hunted the hilltop plot, took the video cam with me.
Right as shooting light faded, I saw a buck. Couldnt tell what he was but i saw his rack shining in what little light was left. Then, 4 does fed into the north end of the plot. I waited 30 minutes after shooting light waiting on them to leave. But the cold prevailed and I had to spook them out. Back after em in the morning.

Hunt 17
Nov 14 PM hunt 52* SSE wind
Hunted a food plot on the hunting club land north of Houston.
At 430 a 5 point came in downwind, he ate for a few minutes before easing back into the woods.
He may be a cull deer next season, only time will tell. That makes 3 different bucks seen this week. Also had a good 8 point show up on one of my cameras. Ill get back in the woods Monday after my weekend work shift.

Got some catching up to do...
Nov 25 I sat in my blind in the timber from noon until dark. It was cold and rained all evening. Tried a couple of rattling sequences about 2pm, no luck. No deer seen on this sit. Saw 5 deer while driving home.

Nov 26 AM - 38* N wind, raining.
Saw 5 deer driving to the property. Slipped into the hilltop plot box stand well before first light. I watched two small rabbits munch on grass for awhile. I just knew something would stop by and eat before heading back to bed down. Left about 930am, no deer seen.

Hunt 21 Nov 26 PM
39* N wind
Sat on one of the clubs food plots next to a bedding area. Fence row full of big mature acorn trees nearby. Sat from 2 until dark, saw 3 squirrels and a possum. This makes the 4th hunt in a week without seeing a deer.

I'm not holding my mouth right or something. Back to the drawing board.
I'm going to my go-to morning stand in the morning, guess ill tough out the cold wind, supposed to be 21* with a 10-20 N wind.
