youth squirrel hunt at twin oaks

Postby huntall » Wed Jan 29, 2014 3:49 pm

My boy is going to hunt the Youth Participation Initiative Youth Squirrel Hunt at Howard Miller/Twin Oaks Wildlife Management Areas on Saturday, February 8, 2014

They have several youth hunts across the state and we decided to put in for the twin oaks youth hunt. Just got email that it all set up and good to go.
Going to be an educational class and safety then the hunt followed by supper.
It all starts at noon on Saturday the 8th. My boy was really excited when I told
Him about the email!

I would like to thank rcbain for letting us know about the hunt!

He loves small game hunting and never hunted with dogs so
He is really excited!
He's not much on sitting in a stand deer hunting. His older brother
Loves deer hunting and cares less for small game hunts.
All kids are different.

He loves squirrel hunting and turkey hunting.

That is great!!!!

These are great hunts put on by the State. I just wished there were advertised more than they are.

The state has some cool stuff for the kids but it's not advertised well. We have had our hunts at O'Keefe every year but this year they changed things up and are having the hunt at Upper Sardis Wildlife Refuge. Not a lot of land to run our dogs so we will not participate in it this year. It's a real bummer!! After talking to the right person we will be having this hunt at O'Keefe next year..

Glad you know the right people to talk to. If the majority of the hunter's & outdoorsman and women, knew of all the programs and events offered by the State. But never advertised, they would be outraged. Our taxes and hunting license fees, fund most of the programs. But, the general population is not informed of these events. It seems they are reserved for a select few at the expense of all Mississippi Sportsman & Women. Politics at it's best.
This practice needs to end. It should be advertised, so all that wish to. Have the opportunity to attend.

I can't speak for other events, but this one was advertised. Twitter, Facebook, MDWFP website, and the MS Wildlife Federation. I know for a fact there was an article in the paper last year, and there was a radio spot.

That's great carl. I know last years hunt we had a small turn out of kids but man did we have some serious dog power. We still had a great time and managed to kill over 50 squirrels that afternoon.

Like Carl said I have seen it advertised in the paper , it's on the MWDFP website , and MWF . It is pretty simple to ask to be added to the MWDFP news letter .

I have a little history with this and I can tell you that it IS NOT for the " select few " ! A lot the kids I have seen at these come from non-hunting families and may be that kids first hunt . I am not sure how it is funded or by whom but I will see if I can get that info and pass it along .

That's good to know Mag. I assumed that there was a lack of advertising on account to the low numbers but a lot of families do not have access to the internet. Plus most kids don't read the paper. Some of us will be visiting various places to try to up the numbers of youth hunter. We have plenty of dog men that are willing to help we just need young shooters.. lol

Need to put it up in places like Sportsman Warehouse, Walmart Sporting Goods, etc.. Another good place, would be to send it out to area churches ..

Yeah, Ron, I would say at least half of the kids last time at Twin Oaks had never even been hunting or fired a gun. I know MWF and MDWFP work together on it, and of course USFWS on Noxubee (btw Ron, they no longer allow magnum calibers for small game hunting)

The first couple of years I was involved it was a partnership NWTF ,MWDFP ,and MWF . Now USFWS is the third partner . I never carry a gun on one of these hunts anyway .... but the refuge has been no magnums for several years .

Just an FYI for some ... the educational and instructional time for an afternoon hunt is as long as the hunt itself .

Arron , I don't see the lack of advertising but maybe I'm missing something . At any rate I realize most kids don't read the paper , even if they did it is still up to the guardian to register for a hunt . I think there are 24 signed up at Noxubee today and most years there are a couple of " no-shows ".
By the very nature of this hunt ( education and instruction ) if you did draw 50 kids to each hunt it might turn into an all day affair ....... keep it short and keep it fun ........ just my opinion .
Like I responded to Terry .... I am not sure how this is funded but with the number of volunteers I have seen I doubt there is much in the way of a budget to start with .

Good luck to all that participate today !!!!!!!!!!!

This is an awesome program for our youth! I guess I was disapointed with the turn out out youth hunters last year. Non the less the kids that did come out had a great time and got to shoot a bunch of squirrels.

I will have look at the paper and the states websites more.

Mr. Ron on another note. I want to tell you thank you for all that you have done. You are an inspiration and I respect you. Your advice, your wisdom and being a friend. I cherrish that.
Thank you!

We are to meet at Howard miller first and I'm glad I flagged a game warden down and he was heading there also. He told me to follow him. I never would have found it.
Howard miller is way out and on some little roads too.
Oh ....and there's a ton of ducks everywhere!

Arron , thank you for the kind words (undeserved ) and I too am proud to call you friend .

I think we had a full turnout today but two had to leave before the hunt . Everybody was on squirrels , we treed 11 , killed 5 ,and put 3 in the bag . The next group treed " a bunch " killed 7 and made it out with 7 , the last group killed 8 I think and said they had squirrels treed the whole hunt LOL !!!
Our kids shot more ammo than was used in the Gulf war ...............and had a blast doing it !!!!

I just got home and am too tired to load and post pics but will tomorrow .

Huntall , I hope ya'll had a good time and were successful !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
