Finally....

Postby chadbragg » Mon Apr 07, 2014 11:54 am

I have had several close encounters in last week, but haven't punched a primer, until today. Since I inquired with you guys about my tactics, I decided to deploy plot watchers and regular trail cams and thought I had them patterned so I put a blind in edge of one of my wheat fields in thin pines. Thursday morning I dropped my kids off "early" and was walking to my blind about 6:50 and caught movement. Yep he was strutting in the plot with 3 hens, I called a couple times really soft but he never replied. They slowly fed out of the plot. I sat in blind until 10 and saw a few hens in other end of plot. Thought I had them Saturday for sure all I had to do was beat them off roost and not spook them. Well I sat in the blind until 10:30 left and came back at 1:00 and tracks were everywhere. I sat until 6:30 and snuck out bumping one off roost. Saw 3 jakes about 4:30. Sunday afternoon I hunted on the waterway with a buddy and saw 2 but no shot.
This morning I dropped the kids off at daycare and a friends house to catch the bus and headed to the woods. 75yds from the truck I did a couple yelps and immediately a gobbler replied. He was within 100yds. I moved up another 40yds and yelped again and immediately 2 replied. I was trying to get to the edge of a trail and caught movement. It was 3 gobblers. I sat down next to a small pine and let one last yelp. 1 of the gobblers appeared to be circling around me in the woods and 2 began strutting towards me on the trail. It took 15 min for them to close the distance and I let the SX3 bark on the lead bird at 40yds!
I didn't weigh him but he had a 9 1/4" beard with 3/4" spurs.

Hopefully everything will work out. He needs to keep up with Dad. Good luck to you both.

Don't teach him everything or he may make you look bad. After all, he did kill his share of deer.
