Gonna try them again

Postby huntall » Fri Apr 11, 2014 4:30 am

The turkeys at my place have not acted the way they normally do so far this year.
I have give them a break here for three weeks and on my drive down as I was coming up on my place late yesterday I saw 2 standing down one of my turn in roads.
It was roosting time and I just drove by without spooking them.
Maybe I can put something together in the next few days.

Worked one for a couple hours and gobbled about 200 times.
Called him in almost in range, but was with 3 hens and would not come far enough.
He's a goodun! Maybe tomorrow I can take care of business!
I can say....one of my best hunts of my life and I didn't even get a shot.

Yep...I heard one gobble twice at the back of my property at roosting time this evening.
If the other bird don't work out I'll try the one in the back.

Got set up on him a daylight but I could hear multiple birds pitch out of trees around and he shut up. I ended up calling up hens two different times.I'm gonna go hunt a little mid day and see what happens.
Probably gonna need the thermecell.

Those old gobblers, know the difference between a hen in heat and a butterball hungry hunter. Good Luck. :P:P:P

Well...they won this year, but I had a lot of fun and learned as much in one season as I have in the last 10 season's! I had never hunted a bird like the one I mainly hunted this year. He never flew down until at least one hen was visible to him and it didn't matter how long it took for the hen to come. He gobbled none stop on the limb.
He roosted near hens often and the hens would jump trees and fly to him, to his tree, but he wouldn't fly down till the hen flew down.

I called him in three times ... twice just out of range, and once on the last morning real close, but he came in silent and I was not in position and didn't get a shot.
Boy was that a bad feeling knowing it was the last day and called him in that close and couldn't get a shot! I dreamed about that hunt that night.lol

I didn't kill a bird this year , but still feel I had a great successful season!

Turkey hunting is fun regardless if you kill a turkey or not! I was blessed with a great place to hunt This year and I killed 4 nice toms but I enjoy every day in the Turkey woods no matter the outcome of the hunt. Learning and missed opportunities are part of it. If you killed one every time you went it wouldn't be fun. I have been doing it a long time and have killed turkey's in lots of different places but public land hunts in AL. and MS. are as tough as it gets. Good luck next year!
