What should I get.
Should I get a gun for this season? I didn't have any luck last year with my bow. I love the bow, but a lot of our land got clear cut so we may have some longer shots this year if the deer are around.
If so, what should I look at? I had an axis 30-06 kit it was nice would an ar15 .223 be good? I like to be quirky/ different

Re: What should I get.
Just my opinion and it will be costly.
Remington SPS 308 with high quality optics and hand loads.
I feel the 223 is way to light for deer size game. Yes the 223 will kill it with a perfect shot.
I shoot a custom 30-06 Remmy 700 and have no issues out to 600 yards

Jerry I feel the same way as you do .....smallest calibre I will hunt with is a 308 as it will take down anything I might shoot at

Yeah I don't want to wound anything. I'm not a sniper so I reckon I should stick with 308 or bigger. Uncle recommend a rem 270

7mm-08, .270, 30-06, 308.. Can't go wrong with any of them.. Over the Counter ammo would prob be easier in .270, 30-06.

The .270 and .223 are two peas in the same undeveloped, underpowered, deer wounding pod. The .270 is good for smallish coyotes and long range squirrels.

Seen quite a few big antelope go down because of a friend's 270 and knew a guy once that only used a 6,5x57 and he was very successful at putting meat in the freezer as well ....

That cartridge should be renamed the .270 Obama. Really not good for much of anything. Too big for squirrels. Too loud for coyotes...too small for deer. It is a cartridge with no home and no purpose. It has probably wounded more deer than any other round...around. Use it for mangy roadside yotes...but don't take it to the deer woods.

Re: What should I get.
I don't know the correct answer to the question as I have never used any rifle smaller than a 30/06.
I do however have many friends who use nothing but 270's & 243's with much success.
This reminds me of a man who hunted in the same camp with my dad and us. While sitting around the fire and watching him sharpen his two bladed broadheads on a wetstone. I asked him, if he could really kill a deer with that stick bow and wooden arrows. He explained it was a Fread Bear, laminated wood and fiberglass and that yes he could.
I knew from listening to my dad and the other men at camp, that he was a wealthy man, in fact he arrived at camp driving an International Scout four wheel drive. Later that night while the other men played poker and drank moonshine in the big kitchen of the camp. The man came and sat down beside me and said. Son you know that deer hunting is like the real estate business. I explained, I don't understand.
He said well son, I bought my first piece of property in 1937, and all I had was two dollars in my pocket.
I then asked, what's that got to do with hunting?
He chuckled and said well ever since that day I have never missed on a good deal. And have become a very rich man. You see, what I mean when I say deer hunting is like real estate. It's not so much about what your weapon of choice is. It's all about shot placement, doesn't matter how much money you got in your pocket, but how you invest it is all that counts. So in other words shot placement is just like real estate, location, location, location. No matter if you're using a stick bow, a sling shot or a bazooka. Without a good investment in shot placement. You will never seal the deal.
I have never forgotten his words of wisdom.

Re: What should I get.
while growing up I shot my dads 30-06 and at camp it was always some one whom forgot their shells and would come borrow some,, and never pay em back. So when my dad said he waould by me a deer rifle of my own for graduation he asked me what I wanted, my rply was a browning abolt 270.. he asked me why the 270 and I told him that I couldn't afford to provide shells for the whole camp... That was 1983 and I still shoot the same gun and scope that my dad bought me and it has put quite a few deer on the skinning rack in them 30 years....
best thing to do is get a rifle that you are comfortable with and as stated by Terry, shot placement is a must.. I have got friends that have lost deer with the 06's 300's and and all... If you don't hit the deer in a kill spot the gun makes no matter. If you are comfortable with a gun you will be able to shoot it correctly
