Because huntall and his boy was supposed to meet me at the gate at 5:15 or so (and I had to show his boy where his spot was), I reluctantly got out of the bed saturday morning and went hunting. None of us saw nothing!
After the hunt we propped up our feet in my living room and watched some epic mississippi football. We had to cut the ole miss game short and head in the wooods for an afternoon hunt and we werent disappointed. We all saw deer that were close enough to stick. Ill let huntall explain their excuses as to why they didnt bag a deer, if he so chooses.
What happened to me was im sitting there in a hardwood bottom that ive hunted for several years. This particular spot is a honeyhole for traveling deer. Every year they travel the same path which is 20-30 yards from my stand. Ive had success here many times. Anyhoot, early primetime arrives and here comes some backstrap headed my way. I cant see no horns and im excited at the opportunity to take a big doe. As she gets withen 20 yards and im starting to lift my bow, im just barely able to make out that she has little spikes that was well camouflaged. She aint no she, so I let her walk on by.
Backing up a bit, as im hunting I always pay attention to the wind direction and the deers reaction to hitting my scent trail. Today was no different. When the spike got to my scent trail it stopped and turned back looking for me. It stood there for a minute then quickly got on its way.
15 minutes later, two does come from the same place as that spike and are following its trail. Im like "oooohh. Yeaaa!" I had to be a little chancey, knowing where my scent trail was and trying to make something happen before the first doe hit it. When that first doe got withen range, I started drawing back. And my bow string made a sound similar to "Eeeeeehyy!" Both does looked at me, I looked at them, and then they high tailed it blowing all the way out of view. The rest of the evening was uneventful.
I brought my bow home and cleaned some of the spider webs off of it from last year. I might even find some wax or something to try and keep the noise down a little.
Sunday, I was supposed to meet huntall and his bow at the gate again, bright and early. But, it was a cold morning, and I was sleepy, and I figured they could now find their way to the stands without me getting cold or losing any sleep. So saturday was all I managed to get in.
