Re: Warm temps. and food plots ?
I planted fall forage, mossy oak biologic, Pennington deer and turkey and some winter wheat
When it started getting cool I planted.
Then came a big rain a little over a month ago.
One field washed in some places and I re sowed , cooler weather came and started doing good and now I think it's struggling.
This one I re sowed gets the most sun.
The other two gets part sun
I don't remember everything that's in it, but I do know it has check peas , wheat , some rye , I planted some turnups, clover.
That's all I remember, some other stuff I can't pronounce. Lol !

Re: Warm temps. and food plots ?
Checked it out Friday evening and I didn't see any that was dying or had any hot spots on it, just struggling as in growing.
The first one I planted has plenty of shade and it's over 6 inches tall , 2nd one is doing a lot better than the one I re sowed.
The soil I planted on has never been disced
and when I disced all the plots the soil was rich. I did not do a soil test.
The field in question is doing good in some places.

Re: Warm temps. and food plots ?
the warm temps aint the problem then....................if its doing good in some places and bad in some might be army worms, wildlife browse pressure, photosynthesis problem , soil problems, maybe the seed spreader didn't spread seeds out evenly etc....u need to put a circle fence thing in one of the bad parts of foodplot...if the plants inside the fence grows and outside area doesn't then youll know its a wildlife browsing problem.........u can also go look to see wuts been clipped and wut aint being clipped by deer

Re: Warm temps. and food plots ?
Like saddaddykiller, you need a spot in every plot to have a small fenced in circle or square. That wildlife can't get to. You probably got heavy browsing going on as the young tender plants come up. I planted turnips last year and they didn't have a chance. The deer mowed them down as soon as they came up.

I would think it could be just setting at a stand still untill we get a few consistent rains to get the plots established. The one in the shade that is doing better and probably not drying out as much.

Re: Warm temps. and food plots ?
No its not on a hill, it's has some low spots.
This field has been hidden from my box blind and never been touched.
So I took the olé John deer and exposed it.
It wouldn't even disk , had to get the breaking plows on her and then disk it..
The rain we've had since then has leveled some of it.
I do need to go check for heavy browse.
Maybe this field they like the most.
My camera won't capture anything that far to see.
The camera only catches what's in the field if something triggers it in the first plot.

I really try to stay out of it for scent reasons, but I do wear my rubber boots when I do.

I monitor my plots with plot watchers. Great for day time use. Can see 2 and 4 legged critters. I use the primos, only like $35. Time lapse pics are really neat to me.

Re: Warm temps. and food plots ?
I made a check of several of our plots at camp this weekend we have some thin spots in a few... I am gonna say the problem is the lack of rain over the last twelve days... you let mother nature give them a drink and I believe you will see a big difference... When the grasses are young they actually need a good rain about once a week and as dry as it has been lately will affect the growth big time

Re: Warm temps. and food plots ?
No I didn't fertilize it yet.
I figured the soil was so rich that it didn't need to.
When the rain comes I'll go ahead throw some.

It could be disease of some kind, chinch bugs, thrips, stink bugs, or other bugs. With that being the greenest freshest thing in the woods right now I bet it's bugs or worms.

Well the first time I sowed it came a rain and it rained 3 or 4 days straight and mud washed over some seed pretty deep.
I sowed a 2nd time and then we started getting warmer temps.

Re: Warm temps. and food plots ?
just ahd an idea....the deeper sowed seeds mighta took LONGER to germinate compared to the shallower sowed seeds so might have something to do with the spottish area problems

It will likely look good after the rain tomorrow and the cooler temps.

If after the rain tomorrow the plots start looking better I would still fertilize it.
