Who reloads rifle ammo ?

Postby White Oak 06 » Fri Dec 19, 2014 8:06 pm

I would like to eventually reload for my 3006.
What is the simplest way to do it and be effective ?
Starting with new brass, the primers , powder and a simple press

Just the basics !

Thanks !

White Oak there are a few on here that reload a good bit...I used to reload all the time many years ago and need to get back into it. But you can get a good starter kit for between 300.00 to 500.00 dollars depending on where you buy at. Check out the RCBS Rock Chucker Supreme Reloading Kit. It comes with everything to get you started and you can always add to it. Just do a search on it and check it out.
It can be a lot of fun but the main thing is read the book and double check everything...you can never be to safe when reloading.

White Oak
I have been reloading almost 40 years.
I am partial to RCBS and Dillon equipment but there are other quality brands available
I would recommend the RCBS RockCrusher press, 5-0-5 powder scale, and a full length resizer die set, and a couple realoading handbooks.
If you need to chat I'll send you my number and we can talk.

Thank you Mr. Jerry , it will be a while before I get started with this goal, but I am serious about doing this.
It is greatly appreciated for you to offer your help and it would be good to have help from an experienced reloader that has been through the trials and error of this craft for safety and success reasons.
It's going to be expensive up front , but I think it will be worth it .

I researched the rock chucker last night.

Thanks again for the offer and I definitely want to get together soon and get this rollin'.
Thanks to jv too for the info as well.

Good luck !! I quit for about 5 years and then started back up about 5 years ago. Nowadays, it can be frustrating finding components. Basically now all virgin brass is difficult to find. I am sure you will enjoy it.

So does that mean that the brass you buy is already fired brass ?

Is it true that you need to use the casings fired from the rifle your reloading for ?

On a press, is there adjustments for seating depth ?

I understand that rifles of the same caliber are like finger prints , chamberings aren't exactly identical from chamber to chamber.

So do you make copies of a factory load that groups well as far as seating depth?

What about primers and powder ?
Why are there so many powders to choose from ?

Thanks !

If you buy new brass it is new,
I prefer to reload brass that is shot in my rifle
The presses have multiple adjustments for sizing and seating depths
No 2 rifles are chambered identical
When reloading I don't pay attention to factory velocities, my 30-06 shooting a Speer Gold Match bullet is only pushing 2700 fps but is deadly accurate at 500 yards. I load for accuracy so I cam place the bullet properly.
There are so many powders and primers because of the high difference in rounds. Thats why you need reloading manuals, what may be safe in one caliber may destroy another firearm

I understand now about the primers and powder.
What I meant about copying a factory load was about seating depth.

I understand that seating depth and different charge weights is what makes for accuracy .
Is pushing a bullet slower more accurate ?
I know a manual is in order , but I'm just curious !

What do you load for hunting ? Bullet , bullet weight and velocity ?

Thanks !

Yeah ! 10 4 on hot loads, I'm not in to hurting myself or ruining my rifle.

Looking for Taylor made accuracy and good results on deer

I've been reloading since the early 80s. Fun hobby. You don't have to spend a ton of money to get started.

The most important thing for accuracy is 1). The shooter and the gun 2). The bullet selection. After that you are just generally tweaking. I have never found speed to play that much in accuracy once I have found the right bullet and COAL . Consistancy in shooting and reloading also plays a huge roll.

This is why I reload for my 30-06
This was shot from a rest at 300 yards the rifle is a Ruger American.
Its also the rifle I used to make a 480 yard one shot kill on this little buck

The bullet is a Speer Gold Match 168 gr Hollowpoint in front of 4x.4 grs of IMR 4064 powder in used LC69 brass.
Velocity is only around 2730 fps but my Ruger loves this load and as you can see It works.
Even at 480 yards I had a complete pass through and the buck went about 40 yards.

I wish I could find a decent 30-06 that shot worth a dern. I eventually gave up and just settled for a 300WM

Another vote for RockChucker Supreme Kit.. It has everything you need to get started, except Bullets, Primer, Powder..

You will want to get a good caliper too.

Doubt you will save any money, but you will shoot more, and it is a very enjoyable hobby. Read the manual, read everything about reloading you can...

WhiteOak, I began reloading 56 years ago & it's been a great hobby. I recommend it highly. Didn't have a lot of money back then so I began reloading .222 with a "nut-cracker" hand press. I soon wanted a better press & moved up to a "C" press when I began reloading 30.06. My main press now is RCBS RockChucker I have had for about 45 years.

I too, recommend the RCBS RockChucker press, if you can possibly afford it. The problem with purchasing something less expensive is that you will soon want something better. Better to spend once & cry once! There are so many good manufacturers of reloading equipment today & most all are good. I have found that RCBS has the best warranty & support of them all. The RockChucker kit that has been recommended is a good way to begin, with equipment that will last a lifetime & you won't waste money with something you will want to upgrade. It should have everything you need, equipment wise, to begin. Of course you will need caliber specific dies, powder & primers. You will also need a case trimmer after firing your brass several times. Lee has an inexpensive one that works fine. RCBS is offering a $50.00 factory rebate on that kit right now.

Let me know if I can help!
