Went and checked out a new property in prentiss county with a buddy this morning. We arrived just as the sun was coming up. Walked up on a ridge where the landowner told me they'd be and before we could call to locate them 3 birds started screaming about 75yds away so we setup only to watch a group of hens come up the hill and go straight to the gobblers. We sat there about 10 min listening to the hens and gobblers and decided to try to close the distance. We got within 40 yds of the birds but they were in a ravine across a fence out of sight. We worked them for 20 min then decided to try to slip over the hill and get a shot. As we topped the hill we saw 2 birds strutting at about 30yds but either he'd have a shot or I would. Then they busted us and we left without a bird!
This afternoon I went to another property that has a hardwood ridge overlooking a bean field. As I arrived I saw the bird in the middle of the field feeding alone. I stalked to within 50yds of where he was when I 1st saw him only to realize he had fed the opposite direction and was over 150yds away. I hit the headcrusher pit boss and he immediately started strutting then ran straight towards me. I was shifting my gun and he saw me and turned to run but it was to late!!
