Barnett Jackal 150 lb 315 fps. Its a cheap xbow but I like it so far. I've shot 3 arrows at critters and killed all 3.

I started out with the same bow. Found a smoking deal on a used one. My cousin talked me out of it. He loves it.

I need to get one before next year but have no idea what to get or look for in one

I looked at reviews , features and price. I knew nothing about them and took a chance, I have been pleased with my choice. I like the safety and cocking rope with pulleys. You can spend a lot on one and I may get a better one later but if a deer gets within range I feel pretty confident with this one.
