quail hunt
My son in law won a Quail hunt at a benefit for a little girl with brain cancer and took me along. I didn't think I would ever be hunting pen raised birds on one of these high dollar places but I must admit it was fun. The birds don't fly any slower than wild birds. We flew one covey of wild birds and I killed two on the covey rise one for each barrel.

Re: quail hunt
I've never quail hunted, but I have seen more quail in the Homochitto national forest this year than I've ever seen. Seems like I flush at least one covey every hunt

Re: quail hunt
I was raised with a pen full of bird dogs and we Quail hunted often but south MS. just doesn't have many wild birds anymore? It's not just MS. it's the same here in TX. I have a few birds here on my place but I have never killed one because of the low numbers .

Re: quail hunt
We were just talking about this the other day, what fun we used to have quail hunting. We always kept bird dogs. Quail used to be plentiful, and we spent a lot of days trampling the fields on the farm. I saw one covey last spring Bush hogging. I leave fence rows and brushy areas for them just in hopes.

Re: quail hunt
My dad raised and turned loose 70 birds a few year ago. We still see a few birds in the summer. There is absolutely nothing like a covey of birds flushing!

Re: quail hunt
I'm 31 and apparently ignorant on quail. If the state once had plentiful quail where are they now? How did they vanish? I've never seen a covey that I can remember.

Re: quail hunt
I remember growing up there was several covets on out place and we hunted them, but seemed when we got rid of the cows and quit planting grass and millet they were not as plentiful. But also I think the coyotes and bobcats did a number on them.

Re: quail hunt
Several things played a part in the population decline. Predators, including the rise of the coyote population. Farming practices changed with the use of more pesticides. Plus the new policy of not leaving terrace rows and fence lines, both habitat for birds. I also think overhunting played a part.

Congrats on the hunt, looks like you guys had a blast! I remember I used to hunt quail and grouse as a young boy with my dad, it's one of my best memories that's stuck around all these years!
