OPTICS

Postby jbullard1 » Sat Jan 23, 2016 6:19 pm

Have any of you ever used optics that were too strong for their intended job?
I have.
I have learned that high quality optics are great but high magnification is not necessarily what you need.
On my M-40 I put a 6.5 x 20 x 44 scope on it and at 500 yards I can see a deer's eyes blink
On my 6.5 Grendel I backed down to a 30mm tube and 4 x 16 x 50mm . Using it today I could have taken a deer 30 minutes after legal shooting time at 200 yards in an open field.

I have been using 3x9 or 3x10 for years.
All have been 50mm and great in low light.
My newest investment was the 4x16x50 and I was surprised at the difference in light transmission.
My guess is it dropped 5 to 7 minutes off of my evening hunting time.
as for the 16x I love that part.
Not longer afraid to take a neck shot if I have a good rest and a still target.
